Some ask, why Broadcast Engineers still maintain transmitters and towers versus going all digital and streaming. It's simple, Overall, according to estimates, more than 23 million U.S. broadband households regularly use TV antennas to view over-the-air content. 82% of Americans ages 12 and older listened to terrestrial radio in a given week. That's still a very large market that needs towers, and transmitters. Engineers make sure it's there when households want and need it. #broadcastengineer #broadcasttowers #broadcasttransmitters #digitalbroadcast

FCC: TV Stations Can Team Up for Broadcast Internet https://lnkd.in/eB2pHUKt FCC "This decision would help ensure that broadcasters and other innovators have the flexibility to generate the scale and geographic footprint—both locally and nationally—that may be necessary to support certain Broadcast Internet services without being subject to regulations unrelated to the provision of such services," For the last several years I have been working to create a new Innovative Broadcast Services that can Complement the Nations' 5G wireless networks. https://lnkd.in/eNK5Q7xb On December 10, 2020, the Commission released a Report and Order in its proceeding to encourage the provision of new and innovative Broadcast Internet services enabled by ATSC 3.0 — the “Next Generation” broadcast television standard often referred to as Next Gen TV — that can complement the nation’s 5G wireless networks. I've been watching with great interest the developments of 5G Broadcast over the past 3 or so years. I still think we have quite a ways to go before we see deployment beyond POCs, but the technology is promising. Razman posts in interesting question about this though, who builds the infrastructure and who operates it? This is the age old question. Broadcasters own the content rights and their TV licenses and Telcos own infrastructure. These are 2 very different business models and someone has to bridge the gap in my opinion. https://lnkd.in/gXNzMxDH
My esteemed colleague Aytac Biber provides an excellent summary on 5G Broadcast ... thanks Aytac
