🌊The Importance of Metocean Data for Simulating Oil Spills🖥️ Metocean data—short for meteorological and oceanographic data—is critical when it comes to simulating oil spills in the marine environment. But what makes it so essential? Let’s break it down: Ocean Currents: Ocean currents are a key driver in the movement of spilled oil, determining both the speed and direction of their spread across large distances. Wave Dynamics: Waves play a crucial role in breaking up oil slicks and mixing oil with water, leading to increased dispersion. This process helps small oil droplets spread over a larger area or even sink into the water column. Wind: Wind speed and direction significantly influence the movement of surface oil slicks. Stronger winds accelerate the spread, while the direction of the wind dictates where the oil will travel. Temperature: Both air and sea temperature affect oil’s viscosity, evaporation rate, and emulsification. Warmer water causes oil to thin and spread faster, while colder temperatures slow this process. Metocean data is indispensable for accurately predicting how oil spills will behave—how far, how fast, and in what direction the spill will move, as well as how the oil will degrade over time. Having access to precise data allows for more accurate simulations and better preparation in case of an emergency. At H-ES, we utilise a range of metocean sources, including Copernicus Marine Services, Satocean and others, to provide highly accurate data for our oil spill simulations. This information is critical during emergency events, helping cleanup teams anticipate where the oil will spread, how quickly it will move, and when it might reach shorelines.
