LET US RE-IMAGINE SHOPPING MALLS AS TRADITIONAL BAZAARS While the architectural design of this new mall in Vrindavan is indeed impressive and adds a traditional aesthetic to the cityscape, we must take a step back and reflect on the broader implications of introducing a shopping mall into a historical and culturally rich city like Vrindavan. The concept of a shopping mall is inherently Western and often promotes a culture of incessant consumption. This raises the question: do we really need another commercial mall in a city that has ancient roots? Furthermore, the sustainability of air-conditioned malls is a significant concern. These structures require substantial energy for cooling, leading to increased carbon footprints and higher operational costs, ultimately borne by the consumers. In a country like India, where the climate is diverse and often harsh, the energy demands for maintaining such environments can be enormous. Additionally, we must consider the uniformity of the mall experience globally. Should my shopping experience be the same when visiting a mall in Dubai and Vrindavan? Malls tend to offer a homogeneous experience focused on consumption, often lacking any unique cultural or regional elements. This sameness can make the shopping experience dull and unremarkable, detracting from the rich, diverse cultural context of cities like Vrindavan. An ideal alternative could be the traditional open bazaar markets, which are not only culturally and historically significant but also more sustainable. These markets foster community interactions, support local artisans, and reduce the environmental impact associated with large, enclosed shopping complexes. A noteworthy example to consider is the City Centre Salt Lake Mall designed by Charles Correa Charles Correa Foundation in Kolkata. This project beautifully integrates modern retail needs with the traditional bazaar concept. Only the main stores are air-conditioned, while the rest of the shopping experience is designed as shaded, open bazaars. Also, there are open plazas and other sitting spaces that can be accessed from the streets, making the place more democratic and inviting for all sections of society. This design is a perfect response to tropical climate in the Indian subcontinent, offering a comfortable shopping environment without the excessive use of air conditioning. By emulating such designs, we can create retail spaces that are not only architecturally pleasing but also environmentally sustainable and culturally respectful. It's essential to innovate in ways that align with our traditional values and the unique needs of our cities. 🚴♀️ Join Us in the Fight Against Modern Slavery: Ride for Freedom 🌍 We’re thrilled to support Ride for Freedom, an incredible initiative that aligns with our mission to promote sustainability and human rights. Through the power of cycling, we’re looking to raise awareness, educate, and forge partnerships to end modern slavery while providing vital support to survivors, aligning to the UN’s #SustainabilityDevelopmentGoals (8.7). Fighting modern slavery is integral to building a circular economy that is not only environmentally sustainable but also socially responsible, ensuring that human rights are upheld throughout the entire lifecycle of products and services. Colleagues will be donating bikes to the cause, that will deliver these great benefits: - 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗼𝗿𝘀: providing survivors of modern slavery with a sustainable and independent mode of transportation. - 𝗘𝗰𝗼-𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: promoting sustainable transport and extending the lifespan of donated bikes, delivering a carbon reduction impact. - 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: joining a community dedicated to supporting survivors of modern slavery, helping them to rebuild their lives. This is one of many activities we’re doing as part of SecondHand September, alongside our clothing drives to promote reuse and recycling, and ahead of international anti-slavery day on 18th October 2024. https://okt.to/wDFWog #Sustainability #SDG8 #CircularEconomy #HumanRights #RideForFreedom #EndSlavery

Did you know that swimming pools in the U.S. have historically highlighted inequities in recreational services? Issues related to race, geography, and poor planning have contributed to the unequal distribution of public swimming pools. However, inclusive planning can lead to fair access to recreation programs and facilities. In our latest essay, we explore key legal cases surrounding resource allocation for public swimming pools and share a compelling case study on the Winston Water Works Project in Winston-Salem, NC. This project showcases the impact of grassroots advocacy and community planning in promoting social justice and equity in recreation. Let's work together to ensure equitable access to aquatics programming and facilities for everyone! Read here: https://bit.ly/3AAXeMT ____ #SocialJustice #Equity #CommunityPlanning

Suicide in Construction! Our biggest killer! On average 500 people take their own lives in our industry every year. So what do I plan to do about it? I plan to run 500 miles in full PPE over 36 weeks. That works out about a half marathon every single week ending on world suicide prevention day, the 10th Sept. I will be running all over the UK, doing various official half marathons, also will be doing park runs etc. The aim is to get about as much as possible to help start the conversation across the industry, I also want to raise money for Mates in Mind who are partnering me for this event. They are a leading UK charity that enables organisations, of any size, to improve their workforces’ mental health. They do this by providing the skills, clarity and confidence to employers on how to raise awareness, improve understanding and address the stigma that surrounds mental health. How can you help? Simple: - I am looking for company sponsors who would like to put their logo on my PPE and be mentioned within my blogs throughout the journey. I would ask for a kind donation for this. Personaly this would help show the vast commitment of the industry to reduce these ridiculously high numbers. - If you want to run with me, please do! I want to raise as much conversation as possible! Check out my route map and see if an event suits you. - Donate, I have a big target so I need plenty of kind donations. - Talk, comment, share, like my content. I will be blogging through Instagram and TikTok with updates on Linkedin Finally, I would love to say a thank you to the companies who have already got involved in helping me get the kit and equipment I need. I will be posting separately about them in the coming weeks to show my gratitude.
