"Designing from disassembly" is one step in the Circular Economy process - taking salvaged elements from a deconstructed structure and reimagining their use in new ways.  ♻ This approach seeks to promote sustainability by minimizing waste, maximizing resource efficiency, and exploring alternative design possibilities beyond traditional design and construction methods.  By examining buildings through the lens of disassembly, designers can uncover opportunities for adaptive reuse and circular economy principles, ultimately contributing to a more environmentally conscious and resilient built environment. In partnership with Stantec and Fast + Epp, a group of our architects and engineers will join together this week to repurpose scale models of a real project which was designed for disassembly (a presentation center in Burnaby). The teams will design new buildings/structural concepts from the disassembled materials, and present their designs to a panel of judges to explain their design ideas which must emphasize sustainability, functionality, and user-centric design principles. In preparation for the event we have produced 4 identical 1:50 scale models of the presentation center – ready to be #disassembled and #reimagined!

“Efficiency" focuses on the achievement of multipurpose designs whose composite value far surpasses the sum of their parts. Circular Design Series | Chapter III Circular Design is a way of thinking about sustainability, architecture and the built environment that prioritizes careful examination and prioritization of the specific necessity, efficiency, longevity and adaptability of structures and their components in the pursuit of a circular economy. In our last episode, we discussed the lens of Necessity, which emphasized making surgical and careful design decisions. In this episode, we’ll be discussing our Excelsior ADU prototype as an example of how Efficiency in a circular design is achieved. Previously, we’ve defined efficiency in terms of the density of value embedded within a particular building component or design choice. This puts a particular emphasis on solutions that achieve multiple project goals in a single stroke.
