Citi Trends is honored to have so many talented women working for us, and we love celebrating them. This week we are spotlighting Melissa, one of our amazing District Managers. Not only does Melissa manage fifteen of our store locations in the Midwest, but she is also spearheading our efforts to build company culture throughout the organization. We asked her what advice she would give to others. Here is what she shared with us.   Q: What has been your most meaningful accomplishment so far? A: My most meaningful accomplishment, by far, is my participation in creating the CITI LIFE platform. It has been so humbling and empowering to bring a company culture to life. I have learned so much about myself and my leadership style throughout the journey, and it has been magical to see how it affects all branches of the company. I feel so lucky to have been asked to be a part of it.   Q: What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned throughout your career? A: Learning to truly embrace change. I think that is something that challenges many leaders along the way. I have learned to let change happen, not by just ignoring it and thinking I have no control, but by getting involved in it. Sometimes the hardest thing about change is that you don’t understand it, or why it is happening, so I ask a lot of questions and try to be part of it. It makes it all a little less scarry and a little more fun.   Q: What do you love most about your job? A: I love so many things about my job! Working at Citi Trends has really challenged and rewarded me more than any other job I have had. I have to say that what I love the most about it is the people. That may be corny to say, but I really think I have the best team of people! It is what motivates me to be the best I can be every day. Not only the people I lead, but also all the people who have pushed and supported me along the way. I am also very lucky to work with some very talented people, not only in my own region, but my corporate partners as well. It has been a wild ride, but it is a ride I’ll stay on for many years to come.   Q: What advice would you give someone who has just graduated from college and is starting their first job in their desired field? A: My advice would be to start from the bottom and enjoy it. Learn everything about that level and grow from there. I can’t tell you how valuable it is to understand the job at the lowest level, and don’t ever forget what it feels like to be in that role. The people that I have met that are really good at their job are still very connected to the lowest levels of the business. I am truly grateful and humbled to have had the opportunity last week to share my career journey and the valuable lessons I've learned with a group of aspiring young leaders in the banking industry. Our discussions centered around some powerful themes that I believe are crucial for success in today's business landscape. First and foremost, we delved into the significance of DE&I in the corporate world. It's not just about ticking boxes or meeting quotas; it's about ensuring that our organizations truly reflect the diverse communities we serve. We explored how diversity alone is not enough; it must be accompanied by a sense of belonging and inclusivity, where every individual feels valued and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives. We also touched upon the notion that common sense is not always common, especially in a world where we come from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. It's essential to communicate the obvious and align our understanding to foster unity and collaboration. Furthermore, I emphasized the importance of taking charge of our own careers and embracing the mindset of a CEO. This means having a clear purpose, recognizing the value we bring to the table, developing effective communication strategies, building meaningful connections, and nurturing the growth of those around us. As leaders, we have a responsibility to cultivate a safe and supportive environment where everyone can bring their best selves to work. Each person is already remarkable in their own way, and it's our duty to ensure that our team members recognize and harness their unique strengths. Lastly, we discussed the concept of bringing the elevator back to the organization, regardless of our position within the hierarchy. We are here to uplift and support one another to the best of our abilities. It's not about scarcity or competition; it's about creating a culture of abundance where we distribute help and recognition generously. Let's remember that together, we can achieve remarkable things. By embracing diversity, fostering inclusion, and lifting each other up, we can create a workplace where everyone thrives. I often highlight how far we still have to go to create workplaces that work for all humans. So, it's great to share a good news story today. OR, in another language, this is what good looks like! Jamie Dimon, who heads up JP Morgan Chase, has said he's doubling down on DEI, even though some companies are retreating under external pressure. Good looks like ⬇️ 🟢 JPMorgan Chase: emphasises that supporting diverse communities isn’t just the right thing to do it is good for business: “It’s morally right; we’re quite good at it; we’re successful.” 🟢 Cigna, Mastercard, ConocoPhillips leaders echoed similar sentiments: DEI aligns with innovation, talent retention, and shareholder value. However, a shift in language is evident. Some companies are rebranding or softening their DEI rhetoric, avoiding terms like “anti-racist” and “unconscious bias” due to political backlash. Despite this, 83% of companies say their DEI efforts remain unchanged, according to a recent study. The conversation may be changing, but the commitment is not. Leadership Call to Action: As leaders, it is imperative that we not only discuss DEI but take concrete action. Simply changing our language or image is not a substitute for real progress. Stakeholders such as investors, employees, and communities are observing closely. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are key drivers of innovation, competitive edge, and the resilience of our workforce. It is more important than ever to remain committed to progress even when faced with the inevitable resistance. What steps are you taking

This semester in Diverse Voices (PUR3211), taught by Professor Ajia Meux, has been one of the most enlightening and transformative experiences of my academic journey. The course provided insights into the significance of inclusivity across various groups. I also had the opportunity to make a presentation, a deep dive into American Express's DEI initiatives. These include Employee Resource Groups, Leadership Development Programs, and Unconscious Bias Training—all critical in fostering a more inclusive and supportive workplace culture. Beyond the structured lessons, what truly made my experience was the exchange of ideas with my peers. Each classmate contributed unique perspectives from their communities, which made our discussions more vibrant and comprehensive. These interactions not only broadened my understanding of diversity but also highlighted the importance of embracing different viewpoints. Professor Meux played a pivotal role in creating a safe and open environment for these crucial conversations. Her expertise in diversity and inclusion was evident from the outset. I personally have had trouble this summer but thanks to her support and her guidance, I was allowed to explore sensitive topics with respect and depth. This course has made me more open-minded, well-rounded, and appreciative of the diverse voices that shape our world. 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝘉𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘹 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥. Last week, I had the privilege of working with 30 senior leaders at NatWest Group's stunning Gogarburn campus in Edinburgh. We discussed the culture of belonging - an essential foundation for high-performing teams: • What is belonging, and why does it matter? • Where does belonging fit in a DE&I strategy? • What are the barriers to belonging, and how can leaders break these down? Drawing from my experience with Team GB's culture development, we explored some key principles: • Differences are strengths • Shared purpose and identity drive us • Prioritise ‘culture contributors,’ not ‘culture fit’ We also addressed some of the ‘elephants’ in the room - the intersection of performance and belonging, and the challenge of building belonging with hybrid working models, and changing expectations from younger demographics 🐘 A standout moment? Exploring the concept of vulnerable leadership as a core tenet of fostering authenticity and belonging within teams. The outcome? A brilliant set of leaders reflecting on their stories, owning the power of culture, and walking away with actionable strategies to create environments where people feel accepted, respected, and valued for being their true selves.
