Sales managers! what are your biggest pet peeves? I'll go 1st. When you hire a sales rep who promises he'll make a ton of sales. Only to be the lowest result sales person on the team. Bothers the hell out of me. I would rather a rep tell me out righ: "I'm not the best at sales but I want to learn." Compare to: "I'll be the best sales person your company has ever seen." I don't know about you but lying grinds my gears. So what is your biggest pet peeve as a sales manager? #salesmanager #sales #frustration

"Salesman" was a dirty word in the Midwest community where I was born. Literally, the word was said in hushed tones. It conjured images of a greedy man behind a desk who would ruthlessly manipulate you to get your every last dollar. Greed is real in sales, but it's also real in every other job. Being in sales a decade, there's only one requirement a salesperson needs in order to be successful. That is, they connect value to others. That's it. Find a message and connect it to people who can benefit from it. The rest, good or bad, is an individual choice. In forming your sales team, it is important to differentiate between skills and qualities of a hunter versus farmers. Hunters take risk, embrace conflicts and handles rejections gracefully. And farmers are a different breed, they don’t like weapons.

We see this all the time and it's hurting the performance of heavy-duty sales teams nationwide. ❌ Heavy-duty companies hire one salesperson and ask them to "hunt" for new business and "farm" existing business relationships. The reality is that it takes a certain type of person with specific personality traits, experience, and skills to "hunt" for new business. They have higher levels of assertiveness than sociability. ✅ Farmers are excellent at maintaining strong long-term customer relationships. Once the relationship has been established, it requires a different personality type to nurture the relationship over a long period of time. These salespeople have higher levels of sociability than assertiveness.
