Sainsbury's is making strides towards a greener future by switching its own-brand twin pack avocado packaging from plastic to paper. 🌍 This new packaging, made with paper and bamboo netting, could save an impressive 20.2 million pieces of plastic each year once fully rolled out. Starting with a trial in 77 stores, this eco-friendly packaging for the "Ripe & Ready Avocados" is fully recyclable at kerbside. Claire Hughes, Director of Product and Innovation at Sainsbury's, highlighted that it's just one of many steps they're taking to develop sustainable solutions. This shift is part of Sainsbury's broader strategy to cut plastic usage, following past initiatives like switching to cardboard punnets and transitioning kitchen and toilet roll packaging to paper. 🌿 Aldi's Latest Steps Toward Sustainable Packaging! 🌿 Aldi is taking significant strides in its sustainability journey by trialling the removal of pulp trays and plastic punnets from several fruit and vegetable lines. By eliminating these materials from products like Nature's Pick Cherry Tomatoes, Sliced Mushrooms, Baby Plum Tomatoes, and more, Aldi aims to reduce over 370 tonnes of plastic and packaging annually if implemented across all stores. Luke Emery, Plastics and Packaging Director at Aldi, emphasises the importance of these initiatives, stating, "Becoming a more sustainable supermarket is important to not only us but our customers too." 🗑️ Ever find yourself feel bit confused about which bin to put packaging into? 🗑️ 😕 Products with unclear recycling symbols are sending excess volumes to landfill. This is more than just an avoidable packaging flaw—it’s impacting sustainability targets, environment, and brand trust. ♻️ In this example the label clearly says “Don’t Recycle”. But there’s a 1-PET symbol on the base of the bottle, meaning it’s recyclable. So the label isn’t, but the bottle is. 🙄 Any brand who thinks an entire nation is going to quickly and correctly decipher this is naive, not 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 prioritising sustainability, and demonstrating a real lack of consumer understanding. 🚮 Brands like this might be increasing pollution more than reducing it. 🫡 This Yoplait UK product is just one example, but there are countless others. Why are brands signing off on packaging with such a lack of attention to detail? There is actually a label for this already (see comments). 👮🏻♂️ And how are supermarkets’ buying teams not pulling suppliers up on this? Interesting read. An opportunity for grocery retailers that value sustainability as part of their mission to move their bulk food sales from single use plastics over to bulk bins. In addition to achieving higher margins and saving shoppers money, loose bulk sold through bins instead of single use rigid plastic clam shells can reduce plastic packaging between 74-94%.

#Collaboration between brands and retailers is paramount for the success of reuse & refill initiatives at scale. Embracing standardization and asset sharing is essential for the industry's evolution towards sustainability. The massive systemic change required to reduce #PlasticPollution will never happen without collaboration. For example, Asda, a prominent UK grocery store chain, recently announced the closure of its refill trials in four stores. They attempted to integrate and scale an independent model into larger retail formats. This proved challenging, citing increased costs, complexity, and space requirements as key obstacles. These operational and commercial issues, along with consumer barriers, led to Asda's decision to exit the refill trials. While in-store refill shopping has succeeded in independent zero-waste stores, the approach needs adaptation for larger retailers to thrive. On the other side, The Refill Coalition in the UK has pioneered a successful model, currently being trialed by Aldi, showcasing substantial operational cost reductions exceeding 80%. By shifting the responsibility of cleaning and refilling to logistics experts and suppliers, the solution demonstrates promising results. Are Shoppers Paying More Than Just Money? 🌏 Last week I read a report in the Sydney Morning Herald highlighting that supermarkets are charging shoppers more for loose fresh produce than plastic-wrapped alternatives—up to 73% of the time. The 2024 Unwrapped: Plastic Use in Australian Supermarkets report revealed that on average, shoppers pay $155 extra per year for choosing loose produce. Supermarkets defend these practices as more efficient, but the environmental impact is undeniable. Plastic-wrapped “convenience” comes at a cost far greater than dollars! 🌊 At this rate, plastic pollution will double on land by 2040 and triple in oceans, outweighing all the fish within 30 years. Supermarkets have made some strides—like reducing virgin plastics and increasing recyclable content—but it’s not enough. We must take greater responsibility for the environmental cost of packaging.
