The other day I ran across a job description for a safety specialist that surprised me. In the job description it stated that the job is a safety role whose focus is to be an advocate for the employee and not the “Safety police”. I found this refreshing. Most EHS job descriptions describe job studies, audits, inspections, and reports that must be written but very seldom address the employee in a positive way. The following are some things that would be refreshing to hear in a job description: 1.     Listen to the voice of the employee. 2.     Employee empowerment is important. 3.     Develop systems in which employees can succeed, 4.     Consider the health of the employee. 5.     Be employee focused. I look forward to more job descriptions like that one in the future!

Process AND Occupational.. I recently posted on the challenge of grinding away in the anonymity of safety - the best result being nothing of note. I'm sure that some of you have experienced the frustration of all the airtime on safety being taken up on discussing cups of coffee on the stairs whilst serious actions pile up in the areas of inspection, equipment replacement and competence assessment. For a senior person wanting to lead on safety, the challenge is that you need BOTH process and occupational safety. However there is a trap for you - occupational safety is much easier to see, understand and react to. However, as someone said to me only last week - 'I'd trade all the paper cuts to avoid one serious incident' When Legitimate Leadership explored those who are the very best at Leading on Safety, qualities that came through were a willingness to engage at all levels and to be both strategic AND detailed. As a leader on process safety you need to consider your role in answering these questions from the HSE - Do you understand what could go wrong? - Are there systems in place to prevent this? - How do you know these are working effectively?
