This is going to be a theme in the coming months and years, and it's something that all Importers (or other supply chain folks) should start paying attention to. Historically, data has not been easily available. I'm talking about data like that which is on a commercial invoice. Or, data that is contained on a packing list. So, it makes sense that nobody would invest to develop technology that requires that data. This is particularly true when it comes to Importers, themselves. If it is impossible to get packing list information, then why would I create a system that understands packing list data? The answer, apparently, is that you wouldn't. Which is evident as nobody has a system that understands what a shipment is, nor what product is contained in said shipment. As you follow the logic to its conclusion, most companies do not have a system where international supply chain data is able to be captured, made sense of, and capable of helping in decision making/implication analysis. Why does this matter? Because the data problem is just about solved. IDP, or Intelligent Document Processing, is a recent technology advancement using genAI/LLM that has effectively made the ability to transform pdf documents into data a reality. (If you're inclined to argue that it quite isn't there yet...you might be right...but it will be solved with v2, which will come to pass in 2, 3, or 12 months...so the point is moot.) With the data problem being solved, the unstated and unacknowledged problem that everyone will face is that they don't have a system to house the data and make sense of it. (Your ERP won't be the solution...even if you want it to be.) So, for those of you at Importers and BCOs, you better start turning your mind to this. This is your number one problem right now. You need somewhere to put your supply chain data...and you don't have that technology stack today. Worse, there aren't a lot of companies that you can look at. (Pssst....3rdwave is the answer for small to mid-sized companies. But other companies like GT Nexus, Gnosis Freight, One Network Enterprises, Gravity Supply Chain Solutions, and Jon Monroe exist for big companies.)

In a world where supply chain complexities reign and data plays a pivotal role in efficiency and innovation, the key to streamlined operations might be found in data standardization. Unified language and data definitions have facilitated great successes in other industries, and some logistics experts believe implementing similar conformities could help shippers gain a clearer picture of inventory levels, potential disruptions, and more. https://hubs.la/Q02qFVDP0
