Our team attended the Women in Business Dinner hosted by SMU Cox School of Business earlier this week and heard from a panel of inspiring women, including our own Rebecca Crosby, CPA. As we gear up to celebrate International Women's Day, I find myself reflecting on this year's powerful theme: 'Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress.' The urgency embedded in the phrase "accelerate progress" struck a chord with me. The World Economic Forum's projection of 131 years to bridge the gender gap is a staggering temporal expanse. Just envisage the epochs that would pass – we, in essence, would be relics of the past. So, how can we, as individuals or collectively as entities, be it a business, company, or organisation, expedite progress? Allow that question to linger in your thoughts. The next thread in my musings revolves around "investing in women." Often, supporting women is viewed as a charitable or altruistic act. However, it's crucial to recognise the dual impact – not only does empowering women lead to significant social benefits, but there's a substantial economic advantage too. Studies, such as the one by McKinsey & Company, highlight that gender-diverse teams can yield a 25% increase in financial benefits. Add ethnic diversity, and the value skyrockets to 36%. The numbers don't lie! The barriers stopping women from fully participating in the workforce are costing the Australian economy $128 billion dollars according to a Federal Government Taskforce led by Sam Mostyn In 2021, we celebrated a monumental $10 billion in VC funding, yet only 3% of that reached women, despite constituting 22% of the startup community. Let that sink in. I could expound further, but let's momentarily halt. This International Women's Day, commit to being an integral part of the transformative shift that encompasses the other half of our population. As we recognize International Women's Day 2024 it’s important to also recognize: 85% of purchase decisions are made by women. Yet, only 2% of VC funding finds its way to women founders. Women hold a mere 5% of CEO roles in the S&P 500. Equality is possible… when good intentions meet intentional action. This week at 4 Times Square, NYC… I had an incredible time reuniting and engaging again with the first cohort of "50 Women to Watch for Boards".
