EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer), more commonly known as the “rubber roof”, is an extremely durable material, widely used in low-slope buildings. EPDM is available in 45, 60 or 90 mil thicknesses and can have panels that are up to 50’ x 200’ to minimize the amount of seams on a roof. Rubber roofs can be ballasted, mechanically attached or adhered. What’s not to like? Just don’t try saying “ethylene propylene diene monomer” three times fast. #Biodegradation of #polyacrylamide (#PAM a very common flocculant) begins with amidase catalysed deamination of polyacrylamide to ammonia and #polyacrylate. The liberated ammonia is then used as a nitrogen source for growth of the microbes. The carbon backbone, polyacrylate (a.k.a poly acrylic acid under low pH conditions), is more recalcitrant to biodegradation.

Meme #4 Polypropylene random copolymer (PPRCP) is a copolymer of Polypropylene which has chains of propylene and ethylene. Polypropylene is lighter and more resistant to high temperatures, abrasive agents and chemical solvents. It is also more resistant to breakage, however, it is less flexible than polyethylene. So, to get properties of both PP and PE, PPRCP was introduced. Update (10/3): The Longshoremen’s Union agreed this evening to extend their contract with the United States Maritime Alliance until January 15, 2025 as a tentative deal was reached to increase wages. Union members will return to work tomorrow and discussions will continue until a full agreement is reached. Ethylene Strategies International Inc.'s President Mark Woods and the ESI Team put together a detailed analysis into an Extreme Case Scenario where the ongoing Longshoremen's Labor Strike could last for an extended period and the potential resulting impacts to the ethylene and polyethylene value chains.
