Loyalty programs are the “MySpace” of ecommerce… Let’s be honest… were they actually ever cool? Sure my junior high self liked it for like 6 months, but that relationship ended faster than when I hit 'skip ad' on YouTube. And let me be clear by loyalty programs I mean… points based loyalty programs The ones that are so complex You don’t know how to Get points What they’re are worth They’ve got you so frustrated And you as a brand are just subsidizing loyal customer’s purchases. The harsh reality though… Those customers would’ve purchased regardless of the fancy program. Customers today don’t care about stacking points Just like users in 2006… Users didn’t really care that much about Customizing their profile CSS and widgets with Myspace. When the better product came along = Facebook It nailed what was most important = An easy way to stay connected. And as a result Myspace faded into oblivion. Bye bye Tom… Building loyalty isn’t stacking points, isn’t a tactic, isn’t a program. Building real loyalty is a strategic process of: 1. Knowing your customer and falling in love with the problem. 2. Building a product that solves that problem and makes happy customers. 3. A brand that stays top of mind and stands out from the rest. The truth is with #3 you can’t stay top of mind and stand out without #1 and #2. Too many brands try to start with #3. That’s backwards… just ask Myspace. P.S. Before all you other loyalty programs and tactics start coming at me… I do believe there are some other good ways to incentivize loyalty like Inveterate Inc. Just don’t do memberships like Fabletics. Kills a decent product.
