Equity in Education: More Than Just a Buzzword If equity is the key to addressing why so many teachers feel unprepared to teach content and why so many students are falling behind in reading and math, then I am 100% behind it. However, true equity isn't a one-time fix—it needs to be deeply embedded into every layer of education, from policymakers to classroom practices. It must become the foundation on which we build curriculum, teacher development, student support, and everything in between. Katherine Cohen, MS, CCC-SLP, of Joybound Publications has her bachelor's in severe-profound and low-incidence disabilities. She was a special educator before getting her masters as an SLP and is now pursuing her PhD in curriculum and instruction.
