In October, we celebrate women-owned businesses, which make up 42% of all American businesses, employing 9.4 million workers and generating $1.9 trillion in revenue. 🥂 🥳 🎉 Over the past five years: - Women-owned businesses increased by 21%, compared to 9% for all businesses. - Employment in women-owned businesses rose by 8%, versus 1.8% for all businesses. -Revenue for women-owned businesses grew by 21%, slightly above the 20% growth for all businesses. -The number of women operating side gigs, or "sidepreneurs," grew by 39%, nearly twice the rate of overall female entrepreneurship. -Minority women have driven much of this growth, with sidepreneurship among them growing by 65%, compared to 32% for all businesses. From 2014 to 2019, businesses owned by women of color grew by 43%, and those owned by African American women grew by 50%. Why Women in Business Must Share Their Journeys For women in business, coming together and sharing experiences is more than networking—it’s essential for growth, resilience, and mutual support. Gatherings like those organized by the Bassein Christian Business Association (BCBA) remind us that shared experiences provide validation and inspiration. Listening to others’ stories of perseverance and passion reminds each woman that she is not alone in facing setbacks or societal expectations. In these shared spaces, women exchange invaluable insights, practical advice, and spark collaborations that propel their ventures forward. Every year, the NC Women Business Owners Hall of Fame celebrates the incredible achievements of women entrepreneurs across North Carolina. But did you know that the winners are not chosen by board members, the event committee, or current inductees? Instead, a dedicated, independent Selection Committee chosen each year and chaired by our Board Treasurer Johnny Bass, rigorously reviews each nomination. Here's a glimpse into our comprehensive selection process: 🔍 Confidential Evaluation: Each committee member privately reviews and evaluates nominees based on each nominee’s body of work, entrepreneurial success, advocacy, and community involvement. 🗳️ Multi-Round Voting: Through multiple rounds of confidential voting, nominees are carefully considered. An "Evident Selection" requires a minimum of four votes from the seven voting members, ensuring only the most outstanding candidates are inducted. 🌟 Diverse Representation: The committee is also charged with reviewing each year’s class as a whole, ensuring that it represents a variety of industries, communities, and demographics in order to accurately reflect the diversity and strength of women's entrepreneurship in NC. The process is designed to maintain integrity and confidentiality, reflecting the excellence and commitment of the women we honor. They say women compete, undercut, and compare, tearing each other down to achieve Queen Bee status. That’s not what I’ve experienced. Recently, a close friend of mine went through one of those life-changing, chaotic moments that completely turn your world upside down. In response, all of us, her female friends, came together. We formed a group to coordinate how we could support her, shared updates, pictures, and most importantly, we came together with a collective energy that only women can create. It wasn’t just about offering practical help. It was about this fierce, unstoppable instinct to care, protect, and uplift. A force that felt like it could break down any walls or overcome any challenge. This is sorority in action. I’ve been thinking about how more and more women are coming together in this way, building communities, projects, and movements grounded in solidarity and strength. Some sorority examples incarnated in the business world: ♀️ Female Founders Rise, founded by Emmie Faust. A close-knit community where female entrepreneurs support each other to build bigger businesses. ♀️ THE SORORITY, founded by Priscillia Routier. A sisterhood safety app connecting women to protect each other in times of danger. ♀️ AllBright, founded by Debbie Wosskow, OBE and Anna Jones. The world’s largest collective of women in business, enabling ambition in all forms. ♀️ Mums in Marketing, founded by Claire Ferreira. Thousands of inspiring women from across the globe supporting each other and create change. These projects are some testaments of the incredible things women can achieve when they come together. A collective force that can move mountains and change the world. I’m so proud to be part of this community of fierce women, lifting each other up and pushing boundaries.
