Back in May, I had the chance to hear the incredible Jim Collins speak at the Women Presidents Organization conference. He was engaging, funny, and backed his concepts with data and great stories. Even the familiar ideas felt fresh and impactful. One concept that stood out was the 20-mile march (https://lnkd.in/gU_mGdCg): make consistent progress every day, regardless of conditions, to reach your destination. "When you 20 Mile March, you have a tangible point of focus that keeps you and your team moving forward, despite confusion, uncertainty, and even chaos." This idea aligns with how our brains reward us for consistent progress, activating our dopamine. But something about it nagged at me. During the talk, a friend asked, "What if you don't feel like marching that day?" I couldn’t shake this thought. Then, I listened to The Doctor’s Farmacy, where Elizabeth Boham and Dr. Mindy Pelz discussed the importance of being attuned to cycles—life cycles, reproductive cycles, and more. Their insights helped me see why the 20-mile march concept felt incomplete. Jim Collins' example of two people walking from San Diego to Maine—one consistent, one condition-dependent—missed an important factor: natural cycles. Imagine a person attuned to her cycles on this journey. On tough days, she might walk 5 miles, repair her tent, and reflect. On great days, she’d move 50 miles, fueled by good rest and planning. Both days are progress, but they respect natural rhythms. As I write my book, I hear stories of writers who churn out 20 pages daily. That’s not me. I spend time on my book every day—making lists, researching, writing LinkedIn posts, and sometimes hitting those 20 pages. I’m learning to respect my own cycles while keeping my momentum. Let’s march to our own rhythms, finding progress in both big strides and small steps.

A sensational picture, a revolutionary discovery, a passionate woman scientist and a patriarchal society. What was the solution of this equation in 1953? A tremendous scientific injustice since Rosalind Franklin was not included in the two most seminal scientific papers of all times.. In 1962, a decade after Franklin’s famous ‘Photograph 51,’ Watson, Crick, and Wilkins shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for discovering the spiraling ladder helix structure of DNA and its role in heredity. Franklin, who in the meanwhile had died of ovarian cancer, received no credit whatsoever for her crucial contribution. 70 plus year later how many ‘Roses’, as Wilkins used to call Rosalind, are squirrelling unseen in the labs of the world? The answer that we scientists of all genders, should give today is the same that Virginia Wolf has given almost 100 years ago in a pivotal assay. What it is the principal difference - wrote Virginia in 1929 - between a man and a woman who wants to start to write as a profession? Many women - including William Shakespeare’s sister - haven’t a room for their own (were to think and write). Mutatis mutandis, what it is the principal difference between a man and a woman who wants to have a scientific career? Many women don’t have a lab of their own, and even fewer are directors of a scientific institute. Indeed, according to the National Science Foundation USA, while women comprise 43% of the workforce for scientists and engineers under 75 years old and 56% under 30, the female Senior Faculty remains stubbornly below 30% and below 20% for physics and computer science. So, girls, let’s go conquer the top of the hill! And let’s do it with all the intelligence, the grace and the courage that we can muster.
