Today is International Hug Your Creative Director Day! (or at least it should be) Creative Directors are the unsung heroes of marketing. If I were marketing hire #1, the very next hire I'd make would be for a seasoned Creative Director. And I wouldn't skimp on the salary or use contract resources. The best Creative Directors not only have great technical skills, they are able to walk a fine line between delivering what stakeholders THINK they want vs. what they actually need. No small feat. They are Defenders of the Brand. They are Magistrates of the Due Date. Ruler of Drafts and Final Versions. It is one of the few roles I would suggest overpaying - and poaching - to get. Every dollar spent on a great Creative Director will save you time and money wasted on endless rounds of revisions and operational gridlock.

An agency in New York is hiring their next creative leader. This could be called a Head of Creative, VP Creative, ECD or CCO. What makes this opportunity unique is that the role has come around as a result of some very good agencies coming together under one offering. Highly esteemed creative agency specialists coming under the same roof. That's why they need this person to understand creative commerciality across all disciplines. Someone that sees creative business solutions over TV ads. And if you’re reading this as a potential candidate, you’re probably busy being very good at what you do, so I'll get to the point. We walked away agreeing three major brief questions. 1. How can we create a business of creative solution thinkers? 2. Forget new business wins (For the moment) How can we win 10% more from our never ending list of current clients? 3. How can we win comeback agency of the year by focusing on making great, impactful, REAL work? Perhaps you’ve tried something weird or new that worked. They don't want someone that bullied their way to great work. They must be able to win people around to their way of thinking, without stomping their feet. I wrote this out because I’ve spoken to over 50 creative leaders, from CCO's to ECD's in the last three months and I'm getting good at figuring out how each one builds their approach. And the ones that scream ‘any business would be lucky to have you’ are typically the ones that can articulate a time in their life against each of those points. Creative Leader based in New York 🇺🇸
