🗣️ Strong communication skills are a vital component of successful STEM careers. The University of Bern recently held a workshop focused on enhancing these skills among our STEM students. The ability to convey complex scientific information clearly and effectively is increasingly important for professionals in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Together, with Simon Milligan and Mirko Kaiser explore how big of an impact communication skills have in the world of STEM. The workshop provided valuable insights and practical training to help students learn how to present their work to both academic and non-academic audiences. Bridging the gap between science and society not only benefits public understanding but also enhances career opportunities for our graduates. 🎓🌍 To learn more about the importance of communication skills in STEM and how our students are preparing for success, visit our latest blog post: 👉https://lnkd.in/e8SDPeuh #STEM #CommunicationSkills #ProfessionalDevelopment #UniversityOfBern #ScienceCommunication #CareerSuccess

Continuing with the ePortfolios Across the Disciplines special issue articles that promote ePortfolios in STEM, I want to share “Science Communication across Disciplines: Reflecting on STEM Identity Building through Notation in Science Communication ePortfolios” by Christine Alfano, Emily Polk, and Jennifer Stonaker. The authors analyze 44 ePortfolios from the Notation in Science Communication program at Stanford University, finding that #ePortfolios create “a unique moment for #STEM students to gain a deeper understanding of their discipline, their place in it, and how sharing their knowledge in different ways would foster a kind of agency” (p. 136). This article offers a model of a multi-disciplinary capstone ePortfolio project (including a very helpful rubric!) and uses quotes from student cover letters to illustrate how ePortfolios can bridge college and post-graduate trajectories. They also found that ePortfolios increased students’ desires to be engaged citizens and science communicators in the public world. Spintronics Research Fellow at INL | Ph.D. in Applied Physics | Expert in R&D, Cleanroom Processing, Nanofabrication | Innovating MTJ Devices for Next-Gen Neuromorphic Computing Solutions
𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟏𝟐 : 🎓 **𝐀𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐏𝐡𝐃 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬? 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤!** 🚨 Many PhD aspirants meticulously tailor their CVs, cover letters, and other application documents in hopes of securing a spot at prestigious institutions. But often, despite all the effort, they face rejection. Why? 🛑 The answer lies in the **overlooked importance of communication and presentation skills**. In Western universities, students put great effort into honing these skills, which play a crucial role in their academic success. In contrast, I’ve observed that many brilliant PhD students from top-tier institutes in India, including IITs, struggle to present their research effectively at international conferences—even when their work is excellent. Unfortunately, this limits the attention and recognition they deserve. 🌱 I faced similar challenges during my early academic career, but during my master’s, I took it seriously and worked hard to improve. Here's the approach I followed: 1️⃣ **𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀**: Your presentation should flow like a narrative, supported by images and minimal text. 2️⃣ **𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁, 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆**: Minimize text on your slides. Focus on conveying your ideas verbally. 3️⃣ **𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀**: Ensure each slide transitions smoothly to the next. Keep your audience engaged! 4️⃣ **𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆**:Gradually reveal key points, creating suspense and drawing in the audience. 5️⃣ **𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲**: Present to peers, professors, or friends. Seek feedback on clarity and improvement areas. 6️⃣ **𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀**: Attend presentations, absorb the techniques of skilled presenters, and implement your own unique style. 7️⃣ **𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲**: Effective communication is a skill that takes time to develop, but it’s crucial to unlock your full potential. 🚀 Remember, mastering these skills will not only elevate your presentations but also set you apart in the competitive academic landscape. Let’s make your PhD journey smoother together!✨ Follow me, Subhajit Roy, PhD, for more updates on my journey to securing both a PhD and a Postdoc in Europe 🌍✨ 👍 Like to help reach more students. 😊 ♻️ Repost if you think this can help someone in your network! #PhDAspirants #EffectiveCommunication #PresentationSkills #AcademicSuccess #ResearchLife #HigherEducation #GradSchool #PhDJourney #IndianAcademia #InternationalConferences

For a PhD student, publishing papers is not just a requirement but a crucial part of their academic and professional journey. It validates their research, contributing new knowledge to their field and establishing their credibility as scholars. By navigating the peer review process, students enhance their work's quality and receive valuable feedback. Publications in respected journals serve as a metric of success and competence, often influencing future funding and career opportunities. Moreover, writing and publishing papers hone critical skills such as writing, argumentation, and data presentation, which are essential for academic and professional success. These accomplishments not only broaden their academic network but also boost their confidence, preparing them for the challenges of a postdoctoral career. In essence, each published paper acts as a stepping stone, paving the way toward a successful career in academia or industry. Beyond the immediate academic recognition, publishing also plays a vital role in a PhD student’s professional development. These relationships can be instrumental in shaping a student’s career path, providing opportunities for collaborative projects, conference presentations, and even job offers. Furthermore, the act of publishing helps students to master the art of conveying complex ideas clearly and effectively, a skill invaluable in any professional context. By engaging with a global audience, PhD students also gain insights into international standards and expectations in their field, better preparing them for a competitive job market. Should you quit your PhD for a career in science communication? Think twice: ✅ Completing a PhD means higher salaries in sci comm roles. Degrees show expertise that employers want. ✅ Most PhD students don't have a strong portfolio yet. Build experience now through writing, blogging before applying for jobs. ✅ Stress from a PhD doesn't mean sci comm is the right path. Consider your options and passions instead of quitting under duress. ✅ Use downtime in your program to write, gain experience, and make connections in the field. This will help you compete against other PhD grads also going into science communication. More on this topic: check the article link in comments.

𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗪𝗘𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 The Harvard Women Engineers Code Scholars Conference will be happening from 17-18th Feb 2024. And this refreshed my memories. Whom it is for? - It's for undergraduate female students who have demonstrated interest in technology. When I applied, I received this scholarship as Harvard WECode WEAmplify Scholar. Due to Covid, the conference was held virtually. What are the benefits of attending? There are various workshops and sessions like resume workshops, speaker sessions from employees at leading organizations, and MNCs. A lot of discussion around technical topics, ML/AI, GenAI, Biotech, startups, mentorship, LinkedIn, and much more. And damn, the networking with so many like-minded across the world. What to do to get selected? - There are essay based questions, and you need to answer them in 250 words min. Now, here is your chance to showcase your thorough interest in technology. Share what made you enter this field, how you're creating impact, and what the outcomes of your efforts are. - Resume I had mentioned the projects I had worked on, how I was helping students, my learnings, and contributions towards this vast field. Those who got selected this year, Big congratulations and make the best of this amazing opportunity. Though I attended the conference virtually, the vibes and the experience were one of the best!🫶✨️ #harvarduniversity #conferences #scholarship PS.: Need any help in Scholarships or tech related program application?
