At Fraunhofer IWS, we develop complex system solutions in #Materials and #Laser technology. Our scientists are idea-drivers developing customized solutions based on laser applications, functionalized surfaces and material and process innovations. Sectors of research focus on aerospace, energy and environmental technology, automotive, medical and mechanical engineering, toolmaking, electrical engineering and microelectronics, and photonics and optics. With its innovation fields of battery technology, hydrogen technology, surface functionalization, photonic production systems and Additive Manufacturing, the institute plays a key role in the Fraunhofer-Leitprojekt ORCHESTER with regard to material screening methodology. With its well-acknowledged expertise in #AdditiveManufacturing and its competences in material characterization and testing, researchers at Fraunhofer IWS are able to realize a combination of simulation-based and experimentally implementing alloy design strategies — a so-called combinatorial material design approach. Based on this, the deviations in material specifications addressed within the project “ORCHESTER” can be mapped for a wide variety of chemical compositions — thus simulating alike quality shortcomings for commercially available sheet metals or impact of repeated recycling routes, also known as “dirty alloys”. Together with our project partners Fraunhofer IWU, Fraunhofer IWM, Fraunhofer IZFP, Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI, Fraunhofer IWKS, we have set the goal of creating a materials database that will enable the assessment of these effects before. The underlying data pool will gradually be filled with process-structure-property relational data that will help to ensure a better understanding and prediction of the final component properties. Of the three demonstrators that will be developed during the course of the project, Fraunhofer IWS is contributing its expertise to the third demonstrator in particular: While they all share the focus on material specification, recycling and criticality, the third demonstrator focuses on the processibility of magnetic materials. 👞 Personalised products like medical devices or safety shoes offer numerous benefits, but there are challenges when it comes to designing them. Current methods often include manual or semi-automated steps, making it tedious and time consuming. For his PhD, Farzam Tajdari developed new methods of pattern recognition, created an optimised 4D scanning device, and produced a novel 4D data set in the process, showing there is a better way to do personalised design. A unique aspect of Tajdari’s research journey is that he was simultaneously pursuing two PhDs. About a year before coming to Delft University of Technology, he started a PhD at Aalto University in Finland on automated and connected vehicles. "Doing two PhD's in two different fields gave me more creativity and made my mind more dynamic. It helped me to think at the same time on different things from a broader point of view", he said. Tajdari is now starting a new two-year postdoctoral project at TU Delft | Mechanical Engineering, where he will study human movement with the aim of reducing motion sickness. The Department of Biomedical Engineering successfully organized the Technomaster event, part of the Vintra 2K24, from October 19, 2024. This annual technological showcase gathered approximately 100 participants across 30 batches from various departments, creating a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment focused on innovation and technological advancements. Technomaster aimed to provide students with a dynamic platform to present and demonstrate their technical knowledge and skills. The event emphasized the development of practical solutions addressing real-world challenges in fields such as wearable health technology, medical devices, biosensors for human health, smart farming, food security, sustainable agriculture, robotics, automation, and energy-efficient systems. The event was meticulously coordinated by Dr. S. Sakthivel and Chelli Devi, Associate Professors from the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The distinguished panel of reviewers consisted of Dr. K. Rajesh, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), and Dr Pandiaraj K, Associate Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE). Their expertise played an essential role in providing valuable feedback and evaluating the projects based on criteria such as innovation, feasibility, and applicability. A special thanks to our Dean Pothiraj Sivakumar sir and the Head of the Department BME KARE Dr.T.Arunprasath sir for their constant motivation. Technomaster succeeded in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among students and faculty, bridging knowledge from fields such as biomedical engineering, electronics, and sustainable agriculture. Participants showcased their ingenuity through prototype models and circuit-based designs, each addressing distinct technological challenges.
