Sharks and tiburoneros are very much like the ecosystem of business. (Tiburoneros are shark hunters or fishermen who specialize in catching sharks) There are many freelancers and small businesses who feel like they are top dog, they believe they are as mighty as a Mako. But they are, in fact, just feeding on one another. You can witness this process daily on LinkedIn. Freelancers who hire freelancers who hire freelancers. Small businesses who hire small businesses who hire small businesses. But there are massive businesses - the “tiburoneros,” if you will. These are the ones filletting up the small businesses and feeding the carcasses back. If you’ve ever filed for a new domain or used your own address for the registration of a new company, you’ve seen this process at work. The large businesses smell blood in the water and they attack. So in business you have two choices: become the tiburonero, or be the shark that outsmarts them. Which one are you? ✌️ 🧡 🌮
In the photo, I am holding a jaw of a giant Mako. This is a size Mako that few people ever get to see alive. It was a gift to me from my fisherman who is also in the photo.
Yours is quite a sober take on the advantages of being a big business, Brian. And I like that you leave room for the one shark that can outsmart these tiburoneros. But let's remember that the size of the pond matters greatly in determining the relative success and impact of a fish. While aspiring to be a big fish in a large pond might seem enticing, it's essential to recognize that the size of the pond isn't fixed. In other words, what constitutes a sizable market or opportunity can vary depending on one's perspective and approach. Consider the concept of specialized markets and underserved segments within the broader ecosystem. While tiburoneros may dominate the vast expanses of the ocean, smaller ponds and hidden coves often harbor unique opportunities where smaller players can thrive and exert significant influence...making a great living in the process. By identifying and strategically positioning oneself within these underserved markets, solopreneurs may capitalize on unmet needs and carve out their own territory, irrespective of their size, and relative to larger more distracted and hungrier competitors harder to fill with small albeit delicious morsels. This is the space I prefer to play in when being small and solo.
