In Spartanburg County, SCDOT has repaired the bridge on I-26 over Lake Bowen. Repairs were made to the bridge deck and other structural components. Traffic patterns have returned to normal now that the bridge is fully open again.

I am deeply concerned about the recent incident on Maple Avenue in Glenville, emphasizing the urgent need for action to prevent such accidents. The collision, resulting in a significant explosion and injury, underscores the hazards posed by low bridges in our communities. This incident also reinforces the importance of the bill I cosponsored, now signed into law, which mandates the Department of Transportation to report bridge collision information. The law aims to address the alarming number of accidents, provide data for innovative solutions, and enhance safety features near bridges. (A.7016a). Tractor-trailer collisions with low bridges have become a pressing issue, causing damage, disruptions, and endangering lives. The Glenridge Road bridge alone has been struck close to 100 times, with 22 incidents in 2021 and 12 in 2022. Awareness of bridge heights remains a critical factor, and this new legislation will equip us with essential data to understand, prevent, and address these collisions.

One of the ways in which we treat roads is through “Rehabilitation”. It’s not a complete reconstruction, rather, a repairing method using preservation techniques performed on roads that exhibit various types of damages, such as block cracking, rutting, shoving, and potholes. As a part of maintaining and updating our state's interstate highway system, SCDOT performs cross slope correction during interstate resurfacing projects. Every stretch of interstate highway has a "cross slope," a term for the angle across the width of the road. The main function of a cross slope is to prevent water from standing on the road. This may require crews to work in the same area multiple times, adding or removing asphalt, and making sure the cross slope is just right. It's always heart breaking to see such devastation when a structure fails 💔and our hearts go out to everyone that has been affected As structural engineers we try and cover off every eventuality when we develop our structural plans but there are environmental and accidental factors that we couldn't possibly anticipate. It looks like that may have been the case with the recent Baltimore Key Bridge collapse. 🌉 Investigations are obviously still under way but these are some of the considerations that the investigators will be working through ◦ Collision Damage: This seems to be the primary suspect. The force of the ship colliding with a pillar could have caused significant structural damage, potentially exceeding the bridge's design capacity. ◦ Structural Component Failure: The specific component hit by the ship might have been crucial for the bridge's stability. Depending on the design, the failure of a key support beam, truss member, or pier could have initiated a chain reaction leading to the collapse. ◦ Pre-Existing Damage: It's possible that the bridge had some pre-existing structural issues, like corrosion or fatigue in critical components. The ship collision might have acted as the final push, triggering the collapse of a weakened structure. ◦ Design Considerations: Engineers will analyse the bridge's original design to see if it adequately accounted for potential impacts or extreme loads.
