As Aleksandar correctly mentioned, there are multiple levels of failure in this situation. It is true that Crowdstrike pushed an update that had a cascading effect on the Microsoft environment, and it should have been thoroughly checked before deployment. But, what comes next is also important! Adequate testing should have been conducted prior to deployment to identify and mitigate any potential problems. Additionally, a backup system should be in place to enable a quick and seamless rollback to a stable state in the event of a failure. While it is understandable that accidents can occur, it is not the responsibility of the car manufacturer if a driver chooses to operate a vehicle in a reckless and hazardous manner. Crowdstrike is currently going through tremendous learning opportunity and I believe that it will help them provide even more solid performance in the future, because while updating went bad, their security was not compromised!
Crowstrike competitors starting their “help” pitch in 3, 2, 1…. Just kidding, it happened the moment it went public. Yes, their EDR/XDR solution is error proofed for life as it is done and maintained by aliens, not humans. I’ve been long enough in this business to have seen most if not all Gartner leaders and contenders do something similar in their past, although on a somewhat smaller scale. Time for a reality check and the biggest one unfortunately is that companies will again start to manually update their systems. I find it suprising that the ‘test first before deploying security updates and patches’ theory is still alive and well. Nice theory but completly unrealistic in real life. So, yes, let us test and schedule these updates, and apply eventually. Today was not a good day for best security practices. Remember, security is always a trade off and about risk management. There is no 100% secure and risk free system and who is telling you this is a snake oil salesmen. Your friendly non snake oil salesman, Aleksandar

💡Do you dream of having a well-trained and growing MSP? | Follow for Accountability & Growth Hacks | Co-Founder @ Empath 🐘 | Advised $100M+ Companies | Repeat 10x Growth Survivor 🚀
Today it’s your job as an MSP to insure your team can answer these two questions. Simply put, if your team does NOT know how your clients businesses operate, then you’ve already lost the game. 📉 Yesterday on EITR, Alex Farling and I were chatting with Jonathan Crowe and stumbled back on this powerful topic. 👉Over the years, we’ve created an abundance of self-importance as MSPs. Yup, we got pretentious… 🧐 What we need to come back to is that technology is simply an extension of our abilities. It is NOT the ability, but an enhancement. Otherwise, we’d still have stacks of papers in filing cabinets and having to wait for the snail mail to return the client responses. 🐌 So as MSPs, it’s our job to ENHANCE our clients outputs, and not burden them with jargon and nerd details. We also need to prioritize the parts of our clients business that allows them to deliver their product to their customers. Without that, we are a worthless annoyance that spits cyber FUD, technology tax, and productivity roadblocks at them on a consistent basis. 😩 So my challenge to you today, meet with your teams, account managers, and service managers to dissect how your clients truly operate and find ways to improve that output. That’s being a true partner in business. 🤝 Oh, and top tip. If you DON’T know, ask! Your client loves nothing more than their own business and would be more than happy to show you what they do. It’ll be one of the more pleasant calls they’ve had with you over the hundreds of helpdesk and ‘ring ring, give me money’ calls you’ve had with them recently.
