Peak Shipping Season Has Come Early in 2024: Are You Ready? 📦 As we approach the peak shopping season, it's crucial to understand that peak shipping season has already hit us earlier than usual. This year, we've seen a surge in ocean freight volumes, driven by U.S. retailers taking advantage of lower freight rates, reducing inventory, and avoiding potential disruptions like East Coast port labor negotiations and possibly increased China tariffs. 2023 posed significant challenges for motor carriers due to capacity overhang and declining rates. Despite over 1,000 truck brokers going out of business, the impact was mitigated by prior profits. Kearny’s Josh Brogan highlighted these issues in a recent virtual briefing for journalists. The balance of power in transportation assets is not expected to shift until retail and business inventories rebuild, consumer sentiment improves, and the housing market index sees growth, according to the report. Potential recovery in trucking prices may not occur until late 2024 or early 2025. In the parcel market, domestic volumes at UPS dropped by 7.4%, with Amazon surpassing FedEx and UPS in total U.S. deliveries in 2023. Large shippers are diversifying their carrier base and optimizing rates in a complex pricing landscape.
