Choosing the right architect is one of the most important decisions when starting a project. As architects, we don’t just design buildings—we help bring your vision to life while ensuring functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability align with your needs. Follow these steps while selecting the right architect for your project: 1️⃣ Define Your Vision: You are the sole owner of your dream. Before meeting with architects, have a clear idea of your project’s goals, budget, and timeline. Knowing your priorities will help you find someone whose expertise matches your vision. 2️⃣ Check Their Portfolio: Review past projects to see if their style and experience align with what you’re looking for. Ask yourself: "Does this architect understand the kind of design I need?" 3️⃣ Ask for References: Talk to previous clients about their experience working with the architect. This can provide valuable insights into their communication style, problem-solving skills, and professionalism. This most times won't be necessary because someone might have referred you already. 4️⃣ Discuss Your Budget: A good architect will help you maximize your budget while balancing quality and design. Be upfront about your financial expectations to ensure a realistic approach to the project. 5️⃣ Evaluate Communication: You’ll work closely with your architect, so good communication is key. Choose someone who listens to your ideas, explains their process clearly, and values collaboration. This is very important because without clear communications, the architect will go on designing his own vision and not yours 😂 Selecting the right architect can make all the difference in the success of your project. If you have any questions or need guidance, feel free to reach out—I’m happy to help! What qualities do you value most when hiring an architect? Knowing who to hire to staff your firm is important, but knowing when that expansion needs to take place is equally, if not more, crucial. This week, we asked nine designers how they came to the conclusion that it was time to hire more people to run their firm.

It’s overwhelming and it can make you feel like you need to reject new projects. The good news is that it can be fixed with better organization and flexible teams. 📌PS. we've recently prepared a full guide to help you with outsourcing architectural services. Architects - These are the 4 'buckets' you need to break down your costs so you can predict what's going to happen in future fairly accurately. The big variable is Revenue, which is worked out using various different methods, before you settle on a target. Revenue is essentially the rate that you convert productive Direct Labour into Earned Value. Once you lock down the Base-Case, you can 'peel off' different scenarios : - what if we add 3 staff in October -what if our multiplier improves -what if our multiplier goes backwards -what if our overheads change -what if ..... if you are still here I'm sure you get it? I'm putting together an overview Presentation and Demo of Budgeting / 3-way forecasting for Architects at a venue in Sydney one evening if I can get a group together. Pricing will be about $30pp with all profits going to Medicines San Frontiers. DM me if you are an Architect who is interested and I can put your name on the waitlist. The architecture sector is one of the most dynamic and creative industries out there. However, recruitment in this field requires a unique approach. Architecture isn’t just about technical skill—it’s about vision, creativity, and the ability to adapt to new trends and technologies. That’s why, when we work with architectural firms, we focus on more than just qualifications. We consider the candidate's ability to innovate, collaborate, and adapt. We ensure that every architect we place isn’t just capable of doing the job, but is excited to push boundaries and contribute to a firm’s creative vision. At ArchiTech Talent, we’re passionate about matching exceptional architects with firms that align with their goals and values. #ArchitectureTalent #CreativeRecruitment #InnovativeDesign

🏢 Architects: Change the profession, or get ready to be changed by it. Look, we all know the drill: a lot of architecture firms are stuck in the past, clinging to outdated ways of working that churn out overworked, underpaid, and ultimately, undervalued teams. Year after year, we see the same cycles—staff burnout, low pay, and a lack of career growth—and yet, many firms choose to keep going in circles, thinking it’s “just the way things are.” Meanwhile, a handful of firms are waking up. They’re testing new ways of working, prototyping technology, and reshaping policies to meet today’s demands. They’re the ones implementing flexible work policies, integrating advanced tech into operations, and building workplaces where people actually want to stay and grow. The difference? These firms are not only keeping their people—they’re attracting new talent—while the rest will soon be left wondering where everyone went. And here’s the kicker: workforce shortages are about to become the new normal. The “enrollment cliff” is real; colleges are bracing for a sharp decline in applications, which means fewer graduates, fewer young architects entering the field, and more options outside of traditional practice. Jobs outside of architecture are becoming more appealing to grads, promising better pay, work-life balance, and innovative cultures. It’s already happening—mid- and late-career pros are also walking away, fed up with outdated practices and ready for something better. Architects are tired of being overworked and undervalued, and soon more people will start voting with their feet. So here’s the real question: Is your firm going to lead the change, or be left behind? _____________________ Hi, 👋🏻 I'm Evelyn Lee, FAIA | NOMA I've been on the client side for over a decade and have spent the last five years in tech, helping create exceptional employee experiences while growing the business. I had a fascinating call last week with a client who is setting up a new office in New York. There are so many things to consider when starting a new venture! We talked at length on what makes a competitive benefits package. Here's a breakdown of some key considerations: 1. Health & Wellness: ✔ Comprehensive health insurance: Offer plans with low deductibles and strong provider networks. Consider vision and dental coverage as well. ✔ Mental health resources: Provide access to Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) or health plans with strong mental health coverage. ✔ Wellness programs: Consider gym memberships, on-site fitness classes, or wellness stipends to encourage healthy habits. 2. Financial Security & Flexibility: ✔ Competitive salaries: Research NYC salary trends for architects and designers at various experience levels. Don't underestimate the power of a competitive base salary. ✔ Retirement savings plans: Offer a 401(k) with employer matching contributions to incentivize saving for the future. ✔ Student loan repayment assistance: This is a major perk for young architects and designers burdened by student loans. 3. Work-Life Balance & Well-Being: ✔ Paid time off (PTO): Offer a generous amount of PTO, including vacation days, sick leave, and personal days. ✔ Flexible work arrangements: Consider remote work options, compressed workweeks, or flexible start and end times to cater to diverse needs. ✔ Parental leave: Offer paid parental leave for new mothers and fathers, exceeding the minimum required by law. 4. Professional Development & Growth: ✔ Continuing education programs: Provide financial support or time off for employees to pursue relevant certifications or attend industry conferences. ✔ Mentorship programs: Pair experienced architects with junior staff to foster knowledge sharing and career development.
