Although naming conventions are not standardized across the globe - usually dependent on specific nuances and local cultures, some aircraft have rather unique nicknames for particularly memorable or sometimes grave reasons. With many dozens of nicknames given to the different types over several decades, one might be curious about some interesting ones and their backstories. So look no further and find out about five different iconic nicknames in the Simple Flying article below!

Found this review of the accident and subsequent investigation very insightful. In particular are detailed insights to the reference systems and automated 'voting' which result in drastically different modes of control. It has provided additional perspectives as to how a flight crew stalled a widebody jet at cruise altitude, resulting in the loss of all 228 souls onboard. For the life of me, do not understand how Airbus chose NOT to put a visual warning immediately adjacent to the Master Caution Light, denoting which mode the aircraft systems were working in: Normal Law Alternate Law 1 Alternate Law 2 The idea that changing from Normal to Alt 2 results in a highly trained 'Muscle Memory' to produce diametrically opposite effects WITHOUT clear and distinct and pervasive VISUAL warnings boggles my mind. This is evidenced by the Co-Pilot having commanded (and repeated took back joystick control to continue commanding) FULL Aft Stick throughout the loss of control of the aircraft...... #humanfactors #controlsystems #musclememory #aviation #training #standards https://lnkd.in/gNHXFB37

WE CAN'T LAND! The Incredible Story of Air India 101 "📝 Air India Flight 101: Navigating a Nightmare 🛬🌧 "A harrowing tale of instrument failures, fuel depletion, and a race against time." 🔥Important Highlights You Can't Afford to Miss Today 💪💼 [✈️] Instrument Failures and Uncertainty: The flight, Air India Flight 101, faced multiple instrument failures, including radio altimeters, traffic collision avoidance systems (TCAS), and the Instrument Landing System (ILS), leaving the crew in a precarious situation. [⚙️] Critical Decision-Making: The crew had to make crucial decisions, such as unloading fuel and choosing alternate airports due to the instrument failures. They had to rely on non-precision approaches with minimal visibility. [🛣️] Desperate Search for Suitable Landing: With dwindling fuel reserves, the pilots searched for suitable landing options, considering factors like cloud ceilings and available instrumentations. [🌧️] Weather Challenges: The flight encountered adverse weather conditions, including low cloud ceilings and rain, further complicating their landing attempts. [⏱️] Race Against Time: The pilots were under immense pressure, having flown for over 14 hours, and were desperately trying to land the plane safely while battling against time and fuel depletion. [🙏] Successful Landing at Newark: Despite the odds stacked against them, the crew decided to attempt a landing at Newark Airport with a ceiling of just 400 feet, narrowly avoiding a potential disaster. This gripping account of Air India Flight 101 highlights the critical role of decision-making, crew coordination, and adaptability in ensuring the safety of passengers and crew during unforeseen aviation challenges.

In the aviation world, an aircraft generally “shakes” for three (3) reasons: 1. Turbulence. Action required. Climb for smoother air. 2. The aircraft is about to “stall” due to excessive angle of attack (AOA). You are operating “outside” of the operating limitations of the aircraft (i.e., God’s Word). Action required: Reduce AOA w forward stick pressure. Consequence of inaction: Rapid loss of altitude. Imminent Danger/Death. 3. The aircraft is transitioning from subsonic flight to supersonic flight, aka “transonic flight.” Your “bumpy ride” is about to get “very smooth” and AMAZING because you are operating within the boundaries and limitations of the aircraft for supersonic flight. Why is God “shaking” America?
