In today’s fast-paced world, adaptability and curiosity often outweigh direct experience. Too much experience in one area can create path dependence, limiting fresh thinking. It's not about knowing every product - it’s about learning fast, understanding the customer, and solving their problems creatively. A strong learning mindset builds resilience, drives innovation, and breaks away from old patterns, leading to long-term success in any market.
This SaaS company hired a sales director With zero solution-specific experience Now, his APAC team generate 30% of global sales! Last year, I met a VP of Sales with a tough hire to make He needed an experienced sales director to drive growth in their APAC region. But there was one big problem… The company’s SaaS product was very new (they’re the global leader in this domain) And so no one else had sold this kind of solution before This made it impossible to find anyone who had the "right" experience. When I first spoke to him, I could tell he was stressed. He felt like he was trying to find a candidate that essentially didn’t exist Here’s what I told him “Direct experience isn’t everything.” Some hiring managers see it as a “guarantee” that their new hire will be successful. But in reality, this isn’t always the case. So, when you can’t hire direct experience Why not assess candidates on their attitude and learning ability instead? 3 weeks later, the VP hired a Sales Director from a completely different software sector. She had ZERO related solution experience… but it didn’t matter. Because she had an impeccable mindset and attitude. She knew how to run a successful team, and the VP could easily fill in any knowledge gaps. Fast forward to today… and her team are the company’s global top performers! (They generate 30% of the group’s annual revenue!!!) Let this story be a reminder that attitude is an incredibly valuable measure. When you hire someone who just gets it…. You’ll completely forget about their “lack” of relevant experience.
