This is a rare occasion. I normally don’t publish posts about myself and what I am doing. But today I feel I have something personal and special to share. I just got awarded “CTO of the Year” in Sweden. The award is established to recognize the increased importance of the CTO for a successful and sustainable business. The jury consists of CTOs, Fellows of the Kungl. Ingenjörsvetenskapsakademien (IVA) and the Editor in Chief for Ny Teknik, the main tech media in Sweden. The motivation reads: “Under Lars Stenqvist's courageous and enthusiastic technology leadership, Volvo Group has taken the lead in the green transformation of the truck industry. Together with his 15,000 R&D colleagues, Lars has steered the technology development towards electrification, fuel cells and renewable fuels. As the first global OEM, Volvo has started serial production of heavy-duty battery electric trucks and the company is now market leader within heavy electric trucks in both Europe and North America. With the ongoing launch of an entire new product range, Volvo is taking the next major step towards the sales target of 50 per cent electric Volvo trucks in 2030. Lars Stenqvist is a true role model and inspiration for all CTOs who are struggling with the development of competitive and sustainable products.” I often say that as an engineer you are in the business of making the impossible possible. 🚗💨 Excited to share the latest breakthrough from our team in the field of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) powertrain development! 📈 Traditional methods yield massive datasets, and our focus has been on harnessing this wealth of information to drive advancements in emission virtual sensing. 🛠 We've developed a cutting-edge approach utilizing an enhanced Light Gradient Boosting Regressor and a meticulous data pre-processing pipeline to elevate data quality to new heights. 🎯 Our pre-processing pipeline has shown remarkable accuracy improvements, especially in predicting non-conventional aftertreatment system conditions. 🌐 Real-world applications of our model span from estimating emissions in non-measurable conditions to virtually assessing the impact of new control strategy calibrations. 📊 We've taken it a step further with a Principal Component Analysis-based algorithm, ensuring the reliability of our predictions by assessing epistemic uncertainty during inference. 👉 Dive into our publication to learn more about how we're driving innovation in ICE powertrains, and let's continue shaping the future of automotive engineering together! "Application-oriented prototypes" - what sounds a little unwieldy in engineering jargon is in reality nothing less than a small revolution: E-T-A is saying goodbye to cherished traditions and taking a new path with its "Innovation and Technology" department. Behind this is a painful learning process: E-T-A's long-established electronics division, once a demonstration of Altdorf's innovative strength, has become a loss-making business in the new millennium. The sprawling product portfolio had to be increasingly streamlined, the sensor technology spun off and finally sold. The new department, set up by Bernd Ellenberger in 2007 and headed by Peter Meckler, learns its lessons from this: the products of the future are to be developed here with a strong focus on the customer and the market. This is not the first reorganization in E-T-A's long history.
