Jeff Goldenberg highlights a critical point: effective business planning requires a fresh and comprehensive approach that considers both long-term strategies, like a decade-focused mentality, and short-term, annual improvement goals. Too many firms fall into the trap of recycling their previous year’s business plan, making only superficial updates to dates and figures. This approach leaves their plan outdated and ineffective from the outset. While we may not know all the specifics behind their decision to “pull out,” basic analysis reveals clear shortcomings: 1. A lack of informed and strategic planning. 2. An absence of measurable data and a capable team to analyze it. These deficiencies culminated in an 11.44% loss in net profitability for 2012 alone, not even accounting for 2013. The takeaway is simple: planning is essential. If it can be measured, it can be managed effectively.
Next time you mess up remember this. In 2012 Chevrolet paid Manchester United $559M to sponsor their jerseys to boost their brand awareness in UK in Europe, but decided to exit the EU and UK markets altogether in 2013, limiting the effectiveness of the hugely expensive soccer sponsorship
