Reason: We are living through a cost of living crisis, at the same time businesses of all types and sizes are choosing to accept payment for goods and services by card payment only. At the point of sale the customer is charged the cost of the item as well as having the bank processing fee passed on to the customer by the card payment system. This is unfair on the customer and is adding to the real price gouging of items. As our banks have reported multi billion dollar profits in recent months they should be forced by Act of Parliament to absorb card payment costs or be banned from charging these fees. Request: We therefore ask the House to legislate that all banks and financiers either be required to absorb all card processing fees or be prevented from charging card processing fees to customers at point of sale.

Yes, business and trade are critical factors in the economy. However, house prices and investment in housing reduce trade opportunities in the UK. This is because it has become an as easy job for people who can afford the mortgage and make them do the minimum in society, where those people gain knowledge in different work fields and can make new trade investments. For example, in the USA, lots of early retired people start to trade in electric aeroplanes or electric bikes or any other trade. This is because the demand for rent is lower in the USA than in the UK. So, if anyone can find a less risky business (renting business), why attempt a higher-risk business and eventually reduce trade investment?
A warm welcome to the newly appointed Secretary of State for Business and Trade, and President of the Board of Trade, Jonathan Reynolds 📣

The UK’s government proposal to increase taxes has sparked intense public debates in the UK in the past few days with the general public raising concerns over high-taxes to common citizens. Yesterday I had a sit down with Zawadi Machibya of New Media TV in the United Kingdom to discuss and unpack the implications of the proposed tax changes in the UK. During our conversation, we also talked about recent waves of coup in the Sahel belt of Africa and their implications for strategic interactions between the Global North and Africa. Head of london office at Seyfarth Shaw, Co Chair of the International department of Seyfarth Shaw and International Board of Trustees of STOP THE TRAFFIK.
A wonderful holiday gift received from the Parliament of Canada- an official copy of the Canada Modern Slavery Act- properly executed under seal and signed. Thank you so much. The Canadian Act takes the common law system approach to supply chain transparency disclosure farther than any of its predecessors in the U.K. and Australia and hopefully will influence other jurisdictions to align in the legislative movement against Modern Slavery. There are a few things that should be made clearer in secondary legislation (regulations)- notably what “ due diligence” means. The tension amongst lawyers and legal academics in this area relates to the application of human rights due diligence processes (as defined elsewhere) to Canadian Companies. Incredibly for a subject of such importance- the CMSA, both in the Senate (where it started) and in the House was presented as a private members bill. Great credit to those individuals who sponsored it and to the Parliament of Canada who supported it. Parliamentarians in other jurisdictions take note that it is good to occasionally dare mighty things. Thank you Canada for getting into the fight.

A Royal Rescue: The Legendary Origins of the Cayman Islands' Tax-Free Status. The Cayman Islands' tax-free status originated from a legendary event involving the Wreck of the Ten Sails in 1788. According to legend, the people of the Cayman Islands showed great valor and bravery, ensuring that no lives were lost during the shipwreck. It's further stated that among those saved was a member of royalty. As a reward for their bravery, King George III granted the people of the Cayman Islands freedom from taxes. Over time, this tax-free status evolved into a modern framework that supports the islands' economy through indirect taxes, making it an attractive location for international investment and residence due to its tax neutrality, political stability, and high standard of living.

Today (August 23) is the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. Slavery is a term that most of us assign to past centuries, but it exists in a different form today. In 2023, it is estimated that 41,000 people in Australia were held in conditions of modern slavery. That includes all relationships based on exploitation - including using coercion, violence, threats, abusive power and deception to manipulate and control a person's freedom. In this video, UniSA anti-slavery researcher Dr Nerida Chazal discusses modern slavery as a hidden crime that is capturing the attention of the Federal Government, which is on the verge of appointing the country's first Anti-Slavery Commissioner. Today also marks the launch of a new book co-authored by Dr Chazal and Kyla Raby titled "Modern Slavery in Australia" and a panel discussion about modern slavery. https://lnkd.in/gDMcB6JT CBC and the Feds, what a bunch of BS. Didn't she say the Government has the final say on bonuses? Recommendations are made in house by management at CBC, passed to the Board (?, some Board) they decide who to recommend and then ask the government who decides who gets a bonus? Such nonsense, such BS ! Another rigged process IMO wasting more and more of our tax dollars. So many layers easily leads to corruption, kind of like all the layers our government has expanded to since being elected in 2015. The libs claim CBC works at arms length to the government. Nonsense!!! Why are government employees entitled to any type of bonus to begin with? Government is supposed to be working for the people, we pay their salaries. The government is being run like a corporation. That is not what they were elected to do. Huge corporations are independent organizations, have nothing to do with government, give bonuses to employees based on many things, job performance, profit and loss etc. If a company is in deficit, logically no one would receive a bonus. Logically. CBC is constantly crying they are in deficit, they need money to survive. Our government bails them out all the time using our tax dollars. So logically, no one at CBC should be receiving a bonus, right? But they always do, where is the logic in that? If it is true trudeau is throwing CBC under the bus, it is only an attempt to save his own ass, to try and improve his image in the public eye. A form of redemption if you will. Much too late for that, he crossed the line 8 years ago. Nothing can restore him. He should dissolve Parliament, resign and call an election. That would indicate Canada remains a democracy, listening to the citizens. Let the citizens decide by vote, who is (hopefully) the best to lead our country in the right direction.
