Attention Columbia farmers! The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is establishing a new urban county committee (COC) in Columbia, S.C., joining 26 other cities across the country with a committee focused on the delivery of USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) programs to urban producers. County committee members make important decisions on how federal farm programs are administered locally, and this new urban county committee in Columbia is part of USDA’s broad support for urban and innovative agriculture.

Marketing Specialist III in North Carolina Department of Agriculture's Got To Be NC program: connecting the state's dairy and small farm meat/ poultry producers to buyers and consumers. Animal Ag Ally. Combat veteran.
North Carolina had a successful year in agriculture in 2023, with significant economic impact and investments in farmland preservation. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler remains optimistic about the future, but expresses concerns about rising costs and affordability. The state has experienced population growth, particularly in urban areas like Raleigh and Charlotte, which could strain energy resources. Troxler emphasizes the importance of farming in the state and highlights the achievement of surpassing the $100 billion economic impact goal. The 2023 Appropriations Act also includes investments in agriculture and natural resources. Farmland preservation is a priority, as North Carolina faces potential farmland loss in the future. The NC Chamber's "Ag Allies" conference and the establishment of "NC Ag Leads" initiative further support the state's agriculture industry. Troxler also praised the launch of the department’s new website (still at buff.ly/3TK9YIs@ncagr.gov) after close to a year’s worth of work behind the scenes to create this new, more user-friendly site. And, as with the start of every New Year, NCDA and CS is launching a new year-long social media series that will focus on young people in agriculture. #NorthCarolinaAgriculture #FarmlandPreservation
