Looking for work has always been difficult for me. I’ve struggled with severe PTSD from a childhood of extreme poverty and homelessness, and the stakes of job hunting often trigger intense anxiety. As a result, I’ve developed a pattern—staying fiercely loyal to my employers, even to my own detriment. I’ve known I should look for work while I have work, but I’ve never been able to bring myself to do it. I’m a Hufflepuff at heart—100% loyal, maybe to a fault. I pour myself into my work and the teams I join. But unfortunately, my career has had a theme of being blindsided by layoffs. Once, when I completed all the backlog at a legal job and there was no more work left for me. Then during the pandemic, when I was laid off from the company that hosted my coding meetup. And most recently, in January of this year. Last December, after working nonstop through the pandemic and feeling the weight of burnout, I decided to take a month off to recharge and spend Chanukah with my family. It wasn’t an easy decision. I was warned that taking that time could make my job unsafe, but I believed in the value of what I’d contributed and was assured by leadership that my job was secure. I was laid off in January. Now, I’m focusing on the future and the next opportunity to bring my skills to a team that values dedication, loyalty, and collaboration. I might have an offer on the horizon, but I’m keeping all options open.
