SCELSE’s Annual Scientific Retreat 2023 saw around 180 staff and students plus members of our Scientific Advisory Board coming together for two days of scientific talks, diverse workshops, and team-building games to foster knowledge and team synergy, and networking over posters and snacks – with a focus on laying the groundwork for SCELSE beyond its 15 years. The retreat unfolded as a transformative exploration, propelling the institute beyond its 15 years as an RCE. Centre director, Prof Alain Filloux set the tone with a welcome address, assuring members of SCELSE’s continuation and charting the centre’s future vision. "As we gather at this remarkable retreat, the SCELSE team stands at the forefront of a transformative journey, highlighted by our commitment to excellence, innovation, and collaboration. With a focus on the past, present, and future, we recognize that microbes and microbial communities hold the key to addressing Singapore's major challenges. As we chart a course beyond our 15 years, SCELSE envisions becoming a beacon of multidisciplinary research, and a driving force for the nation's strategic pillars. Together, we will continue to be inclusive, and collaborative, at the forefront of basic and translational research, ensuring that SCELSE not only puts Singapore on the map but shapes a bright and impactful future for microbiology and beyond," said Prof Alain Filloux. MEDNIGHT objective is to generate a Mediterranean strengthen unity, visibilising our common problems and to reinforce and Support the Science working towards our major concerns: Science is the future and is a matter for men, women, children and youngsters. From the European Union different global actions are promoted to make scientific and technical careers attractive for the youngest. The European Science Week at the time or the European Researchers’ Night and the Open Schooling programs promoted by SWAFS today are some of the strategic lines developed to try to promote the approach of young people towards the professions of the future. From MEDNIGHT we will make our contributions to these EU strategic lines to promote scientific vocations among the youngest and the general population. We want to show the attractiveness and importance of the researchers’ work and professions to the general public, carrying out a series of activities framed under the common umbrella of what we have come to call “Mediterranean Science”. It is about making visible the set of scientific activities and the figure of the researchers of our closest environment and for this we will concentrate our efforts on showing Mediterranean science as part of our historical and cultural heritage, as well as the importance and benefits that it can bring us, to all as a society, to be part of the research world.

LCUP ICIRI 5.0 2023 - Day 2, Morning Session | December 2, 2023 From childhood, every individual possesses an inquisitive nature that makes them wonder about the world. This childlike curiosity seldom traverses into adulthood, but such quality may be seen as a critical ingredient in research. As such, anchored on this year’s theme “Fostering a Culture of Inquiry through Research and Innovations,” the 5th International Conference on Interdisciplinary Research Innovations (ICIRI) will delve into featuring and recognizing the best practices and novel attempts across different fields that promote the creativity and inquisitiveness of researchers from around the world. This year’s conference centers on advocating for cultivating a Culture of Inquiry amongst different disciplines, heeding the call towards crafting more innovative ways of responding to the rapidly changing world. With this, ICIRI 5.0 aspires to provide an avenue for researchers with trailblazing outlooks to share their innovative responses to both perennial and budding questions alike. Fostering a Culture of Inquiry through Research and Innovations, both in and out of the academe, commits itself to preserving the inquisitive nature and childlike curiosity of every individual, in hopes that such wonder may prove to be crucial in changing the world, one question at a time.
