Honoring Advanced Students This morning, I was thinking about a post I wrote in September 2019 to celebrate one of my college professors for Teachers’ Day. In India, Teachers’ Day falls on Sep 5th. I could not recall when it was celebrated in the US and so looked it up and to my positive surprise, it is today, May 7! So it is my honor to dedicate today’s post to Professor Ramaswami Vasudevan, who taught us Physical Metallurgy in IIT Madras. He was known by the name Dr. R. Vasudevan or affectionately by the students as R.V. or Vasu! ~ Circa 1993, we had invited Dr. R.V. to Jam Nite, our annual hostel day. "A teacher is nothing but an advanced student", he said. "If you want to learn something better", he continued, "teach it". I have applied this latter principle a few times in some short teaching roles I did in my professional career. It made teaching a fun journey. Of course, this does not diminish the effort teachers put into preparing for the courses they teach and the follow-ups they do for the students. Dr. Vasudevan’s energy was astounding. In addition to teaching Physical Metallurgy, he had a deep passion for research in the field of Ultrasonics related to Metallurgy. He also had a stentorian voice. Once he was conducting a quiz tournament in a large auditorium and there was a brief power outage. He continued to talk as if there was no need for a microphone and we could still hear him. Even with today's AI infused eLearning capabilities, we need mentors and teachers for all-round learning. A machine can provide teaching materials and media, but a machine cannot emote. It cannot sit on a lawn in your dormitory in a social gathering, have food with you, and utter two statements that you carry for life. Teachers are the life blood of society. A society that respects its teachers grows in many dimensions. Do you have a favorite teacher and what they said in your college/school days? #teachersday #rememberingteachers #dedication #iitm Image Credit to IISc where Dr. R.V. did his D.I.I.Sc.(Metallurgy) in 1959

𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗟𝗣'𝘀 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝘀 ILP's Science Kits prove that science isn't always about textbooks. It's about hands-on learning and grasping concepts through practical experience. In this picture, students explore the inverse relationship between volume and density. The student here fills the syringe with smoke (from an incense stick) and then fixes the plunger back. As the plunger is pushed in with the tip of the syringe closed, the available volume inside the syringe decreases and the smoke inside becomes more and more cloudy. This is because, the smoke molecules are pushed closer to each other and more densely packed demonstrating that as volume decreases, density increases. Using the science kit, students can perform 200+ biology, physics and chemistry experiments. Science kit is aligned with National Council of Educational Research and Training ( NCERT ) for grades 5-10. It's always inspiring to witness how children utilize the India Literacy Project Science Kits to delve into fundamental scientific concepts using everyday materials. With over 20,000 kits distributed across more than 10,000 schools in over 10 states, this initiative has significantly enhanced experiential learning in science education. By providing low-cost materials, these kits empower students to conduct experiments and build models, fostering a hands-on understanding of science. Additionally, the program includes training for teachers, equipping them to effectively facilitate experiential learning in their classrooms.

🎉 I'm excited to share that I've successfully completed my academic journey at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee in Applied Mathematics, with a perfect 10-pointer for my thesis defense titled, "A New Parallel Marine Predators Algorithm for Large-Scale Optimization Problems." 💯 My time at IITR was an incredible chapter filled with learning, growth, and countless memorable moments. A special thanks to my supervisor, Prof. Kusum Deep, for her invaluable guidance and support throughout this journey. My thesis focused on enhancing nature-inspired optimization algorithms, specifically the Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA), using parallel computing and message-passing interface (MPI) techniques. By harnessing the power of the Param Ganga Supercomputer at IIT Roorkee, we achieved significant speedups in solving large-scale, complex optimization problems. For those interested in diving deeper, I've attached my full master's thesis! 📖 Feel free to connect and discuss how this research could be applied to your field. #IITRoorkee #AppliedMathematics #ParallelComputing

IIT Varanasi's physics question paper had a surprise. Do you what? 🚨 Attention #Marvel fans and #physics nerds! 🚨 Your two worlds just collided in the most unexpected way. Buckle up for this rollercoaster of nerdgasm! 🎢🤓 Here's what went down: 1. IIT Varanasi dropped a physics exam paper 2. Students opened it, expecting the usual headache-inducing questions 3. BAM! 💥 Captain America vs. Thanos scene pops up 4. Jaws hit the floor faster than Mjolnir returns to Thor The 10-mark question that broke the internet: "Let us consider this iconic scene where our beloved Captain America proves himself worthy enough to lift Thor's hammer (Mjolnir). He is fighting Thanos at one end and giving his best to save the world." Task: Calculate the stress on Mjolnir's handle. 🔨 Now, let's break this down: ➡️ MCU meets Academia ➡️ Pop culture infiltrates serious exams ➡️ Physics made cool (and slightly more bearable) But here's the real kicker: This isn't just about making exams fun. It's about bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world (okay, movie-world) applications. How can we leverage this approach? 1. Use relatable scenarios to teach complex concepts 2. Encourage creative thinking in problem-solving 3. Make learning more engaging and memorable 4. Show students the practical (or impractical) applications of their studies Remember: Learning doesn't have to be boring. It can be as exciting as... well, saving the universe! What's your take? Should we see more pop culture references in academic settings? Or should we keep Thanos out of the classroom? Share your thoughts below! 👇 P.S. If you're an #IIT #Varanasi student who took this #exam, we need details! Did you geek out or freak out? 😂 Share this with a Professor.
