Not a lot of battle-tested founders, operators, and investors talk about learnings from the trenches and their startup battle scars. While at Stanford University Graduate School of Business, I and Anand spent close to a year interviewing more than 85+ Robotics Start-up founders, Investors, and Operators. This has been close to us and an integral part of our Cardinal Robotics journey. The lessons we learned, changed how we built Cardinal – from our beginnings of building robots to the different pivots to now finally, creating products and services that enable robot adoption.

Great insight by Aditya Ranjan, co-founder of Cardinal Robotics, on how hard it is to start, scale, and maintain a robotics company. Of the issues he lists out, I can cite an example of a firm that failed due to that point. The biggest issue is robot startups need to have much more longer runways to get them to viable products. This is a doubled-edge sword because it means your idea / product better be well vetted and has a market fit, because there will probably be no time or money to pivot when the firm figures that out. Also, there is just all of the costs of hardware, talent, and rent that will quickly be eaten up if one poorly plans what their true timeline to commercialization is. There is another extremely important factor: hardware does not understand software, and software knows nothing about the hardware. It is not possible to apply 'good practices' from one or both domains. A completely new approach and culture based on mutual understanding have to be built.
