The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance #BrakeSafetyWeek starts next week. Plan ahead for your capacity needs from August 25 – 31, 2024. During this week, drivers can expect law enforcement to conduct vehicle inspections and specifically check for brake issues on their trucks. If an issue is found, drivers may be issued out-of-service violations. Available capacity decreases during inspection weeks but Schneider's safe drivers and equipment will keep your freight moving. The 2024 out-of-service criteria replace and supersede all previous versions. Certified commercial motor vehicle enforcement personnel utilize the out-of-service criteria to determine whether or not drivers or vehicles present an imminent hazard and should be placed out of service. The federal regulations, together with CVSA’s out-of-service criteria, provide the standards that drivers, motor carriers and law enforcement personnel use to ensure the commercial motor vehicles and professional drivers operating on North America’s roadways are safe and compliant. While 2024's Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance International Roadcheck found that 77% of commercial vehicles did not have any out-of-service (OOS) violations, this year's data recategorized 20% brake violation codes as part of Defective Service Brake issues, revealing larger trends in the industry. This year, Defective Service Brake OOS violations were the top issue across North America and in the U.S., with 20% brake violations, which can be caused by improper brake adjustment and worn linings, making up the bulk of violations in this category. “The data shows that brake adjustment is a chronic problem, so carriers need to find a way to address this issue with their drivers,” said Jeremy Disbrow, roadside inspection specialist for CVSA. #truckingindustry #safety #inspections
