Money is information. A currency must move at the speed of information or it will cease to be money. Before telecommunications, the speed of information was the speed of physical matter: the speed of a letter on horseback or a message on a carrier pigeon. In the Internet age, digital (fiat) currency is money because it moves at the new speed of information: light speed. If the banks collapse, we aren’t going back to gold unless the Internet also fails. The main driver of the gold market in 2024 has been China with strong demand ahead of Chinese New Year (10th February). This has been reflected in Swiss Gold export data; Switzerland plays a pivotal role in the gold market as the world’s largest importer, exporter, and refiner of the metal. Swiss exports to China/HK were up 9% to 570.9t for 2023 and reported a post pandemic high of 122t in January 2024 with SGE withdrawals also up 70% YoY at 271t; a 10 year high. This strength of demand has been matched by prices with gold trading at a US$49.1/oz premium to London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) prices in China in January. The Indian market remains weaker with Swiss gold exports to India up 4% to 233.7t in 2023 and the market reported a weak start to 2024 with exports of 14t with the metal trading at a US$7.5/oz discount to LBMA prices in January.
