Yesterday, we attended the presentation of the latest IPPR report on school exclusions across England, and the numbers are truly shocking. 32 million days of learning were lost to suspensions and unauthorised absences in the 2022/23 school year. https://lnkd.in/dXE8DwVH It was great hearing from speakers like Pepe DiIasio, Chair of the Who Is Losing Learning Solutions Council, and Florence Kroll, Director of Children’s Services in Greenwich. Their insights into tailored, bespoke approaches and bridging the gap between schools and families were particularly inspiring. At School-Home Support, we strongly believe that radical collaboration between all stakeholders is essential. We fully support a whole family approach, with early help interventions that are bespoke to each child’s unique needs. This is how we can make sure every child is in school, ready to learn and has the opportunity to thrive in education. #EducationForAll #WholeFamilySupport

Go and have a look at the Ofsted Big Listen questionnaire and think. Ask yourself what is the purpose of Ofsted and how does this questionnaire address that over-riding objective? Think about questionnaire design. Ask yourself how many questions there are and how easy they are to follow. Think about the number of stakeholders the questionnaire is attempting to address. Is that possible in one questionnaire? How do stakeholders who span more than one sub-group fit in? Ask yourself what is the purpose of this questionnaire? Reflect on the way power is held in the UK through creating overwhelming bureaucracy. In our Country, which does not have a written constitution, the power is held by lack of transparency. Complex wordy questionaires can produce any answer a Statistician is hoping to produce to serve those in power. The people are allowed to participate in their own oppression. We want excellent schools which serve the pupils and the community. We know that Headteachers, like Ruth Perry, live for their schools and continuous improvement. We know when teachers come together they talk about little else than teaching and strategies to overcome barriers to learning. Imagine we empowered the profession to self-regulate. Ask why we need to police and control teaching so tightly. What are we hoping to achieve and what are we achieving? How much of that "control" obsession has created the massive expansion of Senior Management teams in schools and multi-academy trusts? We need a national conversation about the purpose of Ofsted and whether we need it at all. We need to discuss how we make Education accountable to local stakeholders; as well as empowering teachers to share expertise globally in their search for better approaches. Let's not drown in a questionnaire. Let's make space to ask questions about the over-riding structure of the industry first and how it serves pupils and society. #childdevelopment #childrensmentalhealth #schoolimprovement #attendance #skillsforlife #skillshortage #teaching https://lnkd.in/d-QGhQ4D

Did you know that more than one million children are set to be supported into regular education as part of a major expansion of the attendance hubs? If all goes well, there will be 18 new attendance hubs across six regions, bringing the total to 32. Importantly, this will see nearly 2,000 schools helped to tackle persistent absence! These hubs are run by schools with excellent attendance that share practical ideas with other primary, secondary, alternative provision and special schools in England that need help to boost their attendance. Whilst all those in education will need some well-deserved (we know you are still busy) time out over the summer, don't forget it may be a good plan to pick up the latest Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024 document from time to time to be ready. The latest update was published on May 24th, all to go live in September. #safeguarding #education #KCSIE24

📢 Reminder 📢 If your child is unable to attend school, they still have a right to education - end of! We hear of so many parents having to fund educational provision for their children because they can’t attend school. The law is very clear that local authorities are responsible for arranging suitable and (normally) full-time education for children of compulsory school age who, because of exclusion, illness or other reasons, would not receive suitable education without such provision. #EHCP #School #SEN #Education (Image description: a light green background, with a white circle, in the circle it says ‘reminder, if your child is unable to attend school, they stlll have a right to education’ and underneath is a school book with lines coming out of it to different objects like the globe and a lightbulb)

These figures are why high quality options for alternative provision are so important and why they have the potential to be life-changing for the young people fortunate to access them. These figures are also a challenge to our whole system, to work on building an inclusive mainstream education, an engaging and varied curriculum, and relational behaviour approaches to reduce the need for AP in the first place.
School exclusions are at record-breaking levels in 2023/24, with the equivalent of 4100 children being excluded every day. Data from the Department for Education released last week reveals that temporary suspensions and permanent expulsions have soared to record levels and the most vulnerable children are at greatest risk of falling out of school and losing out on education. The Who’s Losing Learning Coalition – an alliance of Impetus, IPPR, The Difference, and Mission 44 – has come together to analyse the scale and impact of lost learning. Findings highlight the urgent need for action: https://lnkd.in/ediivGWe #Education #Exclusions

I began teaching at a school where I specialised in literacy. Eventually I became a Primary School Headteacher then I worked in the voluntary sector. I was a Presiding Justice (magistrate)-youth and adult courts.
