Starting in Zambia, Healthy Learners is building a model for how to improve the health of school children throughout low and middle-income countries. We make schools an access point for children’s health by training select teachers as community health workers and linking schools with the healthcare system to create better health and brighter futures! #school #education #health #healthcare #healthylearners #Zambia #subsaharanafrica #africa #philanthropy #giveback #makeadifference

At Healthy Learners, we believe that the media is an essential partner in driving the success of Zambia’s School Health Program (SHP). In 2024, Healthy Learners took an important step in training National Media Champions, with plans to extend this initiative to the districts. Why is media so crucial to the School Health Program? The media plays a key role in raising awareness and educating the public about the importance of school health. They help amplify the voices of learners, teachers, and communities who benefit from SHP and create a platform for critical discussions around child health and education. Their influence extends far and wide, ensuring that every corner of Zambia hears the message that healthy students are the foundation of a brighter future. As we continue our support of the School Health Program, we see the media as a vital ally in sharing success stories, advocating for better health policies, and mobilizing community support. Together, we can ensure that school-going children across Zambia stay healthy, learn effectively, and thrive. #MediaForHealth #HealthyLearners #SchoolHealthProgram #Zambia #PublicHealth #PartnershipsForHealth

President Hakainde Hichilema Commends School Health Program at Historic Delivery Forum! On Wednesday, October 9th, Healthy Learners was honoured to participate in the first-ever Presidential Delivery Unit Zambia (PDU) Delivery Forum, which President Hakainde Hichilema presided over at the Taj Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka. We were thrilled to showcase our work at the forum, with the President himself visiting our exhibition to interact with our staff and hear firsthand from beneficiaries of the School Health Program (SHP). Our COO Angel Chibuye Chelwa and VP, Programs Ignicious Bulongo, and our Advocacy team Norah Kumwenda - Phiri and Andrew Banda were also in attendance, representing Healthy Learners as we demonstrated our commitment to transforming the health and education outcomes for Zambia’s learners. Our introduction came from none other than the Head of the PDU, who has become a strong champion of the SHP after visiting our sites in Lusaka and Mansa. The day was highlighted by both President Hichilema and the Minister of Health commending the tremendous progress made under SHP and recognizing its potential for an even greater impact in transforming the lives of Zambia's schoolchildren. We are immensely grateful to the entire PDU for amplifying the cause of the School Health Program and to President Hichilema for his continued support. Healthy Learners remains committed to supporting the government in its mission to bring SHP to every school, ensuring a healthier, brighter future for every learner. #PresidentialDeliveryUnit #SchoolHealthProgram #HealthyLearners #EducationAndHealth #Zambia #BrighterFuture

This past June, we proudly supported the Strategic Plan Development Meeting of the Zambia Parliamentary Caucus on School Health. In collaboration with Healthy Learners, this strategic plan will serve as a key guide to advancing child health in Zambia, with a vision to benefit communities across the nation and beyond. The objectives are clear and ambitious: 1. Improve the health of Zambia’s children by partnering directly with the Government and local communities. 2. Combat preventable illnesses in low-resource settings that threaten children’s futures. 3. Reduce absenteeism, improve academic outcomes, and ensure children remain healthy and active learners. 4. Train school health teachers to make schools a critical entry point into the public healthcare system. The Zambia Parliamentary Caucus on School Health (ZPCSH) is a voluntary body of Zambian Parliamentarians established to promote and enhance school health programs and initiatives across Zambia. The Caucus operates under a constitution that outlines its framework and governance, with the primary goal of improving the health and well-being of school-aged children. Through advocacy, collaboration, and strategic planning, ZPCSH works to ensure that every child in Zambia has access to the healthcare needed to succeed academically and thrive physically. By working together, we can ensure that the next generation of Zambians thrives—healthy, educated, and ready to succeed! #PartnershipsForHealth #HealthyLearners #SchoolHealthProgram #ChildHealth #Zambia

Celebrating World Teachers' Day! 🎉 While World Teachers' Day officially falls tomorrow, we’ve already begun celebrating across Zambia today under the theme “Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education.” From Lusaka to districts nationwide, Healthy Learners was proud to be part of the celebrations, engaging with incredible teachers who are at the heart of the School Health Program (SHP). At our booths, we had the chance to connect with educators and share how their dedication to both education and health is shaping the future of Zambia’s children. In Lusaka, the event was graced by the Minister of Education, Hon. Douglas Syakalima, who visited our stand to personally meet Health Teachers and Healthy Learners staff. He also took time to award some of the best-performing Lusaka schools in the SHP, recognizing the invaluable work being done! As we approach World Teachers' Day tomorrow, we want to celebrate and thank all teachers, especially our incredible Health Teachers – thank you for your hard work, and dedication, and for being champions of both education and health! #WorldTeachersDay #HealthyLearners #SchoolHealthProgram #ThankYouTeachers #EducationAndHealth #Zambia

Beautiful!
As we celebrate our teachers, particularly our Partner Health Teachers and School Administrators, here is my little poem to them as shared in their WhatsApp groups: The Balancing Heart of a Teacher. To the hands that guide, to the hearts that care, You teach with compassion, beyond the flair. More than just books, beyond the page, You heal the young minds in their tender age. In every child, you plant a seed, Of hope, of strength, of dreams to lead. You mend their bodies, lift their soul, So they may stay in school, whole and whole. You are the ones who see beyond, To where health and learning form a bond. You mend the sick, you ease their pain, So they can stand and thrive again. Oh, teachers of health, so brave and true, The world is brighter because of you. Today we honor your noble quest, To uplift, to heal, to give your best. For every child you help stay in class, Their future shines like uncut glass. Because of you, they rise and grow, Into the leaders of tomorrow we’ll know. For every child you help, you build a bridge, To brighter heights, to learning's ridge. Where dreams take flight, where futures soar, Because you cared, because you swore. On this Teachers’ Day, we honor it all, Your healing hands, your teaching call. For you do it all, with love so deep, Helping young minds rise, helping them leap. Happy Teachers' Day! 🤗 You balance it all with grace and heart! ❤️ Mailess Chabalenge. Regional Program Coordinator, Healthy Learners.
