Author of the book, "The Top 50 Science Questions with Surprising Answers" and Associate Professor of Physics at West Texas A&M University.
Interestingly, the secondary bow of rainbow is technically always present! However, it's often so faint that you can't see it with your naked eyes. A few days ago, I was able to clearly see the secondary bow with my naked eyes for the first time in my life. I checked that off my bucket list. The primary bow arises from a single internal reflection of the light in the water droplet (and the refraction when entering and exiting the droplet), whereas the secondary bow arises from light doing the same type of thing but reflecting *two* times in a row off of the inner back surface of the droplet. The extra reflection of the light that becomes the secondary bow means that the colors get the order reversed. If you look closely, the primary goes inward from red to violet whereas the secondary bow goes inward from violet to red. In very rare circumstances you can even see a quadruple rainbow. If you are near a still lake and looking in the right direction, then the primary and secondary bow form in the usual way from direct sunlight, but then also a lot of sunlight reflects off of the lake and encounters the water droplets from a slightly different angle, so that this light forms two more bows at slightly different locations from the first two bows. As a result, you see four bows. However, the extra two bows are usually not symmetrically aligned with the first two bows, because the reflection off of the lake changed the incident angles.
