Hard to find the "right" words. Days, weeks, months, have passed since the begining of this war. Each day bringing its cortege of crimes and atrocities to the attention of the World. Many individuals have reacted, have written, condemned the perpetrators from both sides, have asked for the respect of Geneva's Conventions, for civilians not to be targeted, for a minimum of decency to be observed, for a bit of humanity, for criminals to face justice. Few courageous States have too, Belgium, Ireland, Spain, South Africa, just to mention the most vocal ones perhaps. The UN too of course, the ICRC, NGOs such as MSF, MDM, ACF, etc. Countless citizens have demonstrated across the World, calling upon their respective State, some facing police brutality in response of a legitimate claim for justice. None of these multiple manifestations has had the slightest perceptible, tangible, result so far. At the end of the day, despite reactions mentioned above, Palestinians are indeed alone, abandonned to their misery by the rest of the world. Like Armenians were in 1918, like native American Indians, like so many before them in fact. Perhaps the World had an excuse then not to prevent or stop these previous episods of mass murdering. It didn't know, didn't have access to information. But what about today? Today the World is watching live, the World is fully aware of what is happening in Palestine. And yet the massacre goes on. Is access to information a game changer? No, it is not. And neither is IHL or any international norms. Or so it seems. For those of us who thought they were, or could be, we were just fools. The wake up call is hard. But, to tell the truth, I feard that day would come after 9/11 and the global war on terror that followed. And here we are. Isn't it worrying, scaring even, to live in such a World ? A World with no real rules ? What is happening to Palestinians today could happen to any of us tomorrow. None of us is safe anymore in today's world. Perhaps we never were. Scary World we live in indeed.
