If you know a thing or two about the printing or flexible packaging industry, you know that one of the biggest obstacles is transitioning from one print medium to another one! It's never as easy as they make it look, and #HectaresSoda is an excellent example of this. This customer wanted to convert from digitally printed cans to sleeved cans while maintaining the same look and feel of the design. TL;DR, we nailed it ⭐ This particular project involved several challenges, and we were up for the test! 🔸 Colour Shifts: Digital and flexo use different colour systems (CMYK vs PMS/combo), leading to potential colour discrepancies. We requested a physical sample to achieve accurate colour reproduction. 🔸 Design Adaptation: Complex designs must be adapted for the flexo process due to the particularities of art setup / print plates. We maintained the dragon fruit element by use of C+M+Y+K print plates while the other colours were converted to PMS, and we outlined the white text to maintain clarity. This ensured that all details remained sharp and true to the original. 🔸 Plate Costs: Each colour in flexo requires a separate plate, which can be costly. There is also a maximum amount of plates you can use on one design. We suggested adjusting the THC label colour from green to black, reducing that unnecessary plate. They were all for it! Understanding these differences and challenges can help brands make informed decisions about transitioning between printing methods. #Packaging tips for buyers new to ordering custom printed packaging: Most #printers don’t use the date you issue a PO to start the countdown to deadline. Ship dates are nearly always provided from the date your custom #art is approved. There’s a whole step between your art + PO submission and getting your order in the queue. It’s called “prepress” and these folks will make you a proof of how your art is going to be reproduced by their industrial printing machines. Sometimes #prepress must do things to make your art printable, much like a structural engineer might need to make improvements to building plans to ensure your new house stays standing. In either case, you need to look at the proofs and make sure it’s what you want made/built. (It’s also a good time to make sure your barcode has the correct digits and your ingredients are correct! Hello spellcheck, my friend!) Sometimes physical proofs are necessary to ensure color and materials are accurate. This proofing process doesn’t happen instantly. It can take anywhere from 1-5+ days depending what kind of proof you need. And that’s typically not included in the lead time printers give their customers. (Reorders of approved art that require no changes is a different story!) So be advised! If you have a date that you need packaging in your co-manufacturer’s hands by, it’s important to let your printer know early on, and be responsive to art questions and proof submissions 💡
