My desire to pursue a degree in higher education and student affairs has been influenced by my resilience and determination. As a secondary school teacher, I have developed a passion for education beyond the classroom teaching and learning activities. Pursuing a degree in higher education and student affairs will enhance my understanding of post-secondary education, allowing me to better support students transitioning from secondary to higher education. My teaching experience has provided valuable skills in pedagogy, student support, and community engagement, which I aim to apply in a higher education setting. The higher education and student affairs program, which serves as a catalyst for transformative changes, allows students to apply their hands-on practical experience to resolve problems related to student identities, college assessment, and student outcomes/success. With its core competencies in promoting an inclusive learning environment and faculty critical perspectives in stimulating equity, diversity, and inclusion. The higher education and student affairs program is the pillar that prepares students for a rapidly changing world. The program is highly exceptional with its emphasis which focuses on equity, diversity, and social justice provides the need for historically underrepresented students with a kind of career support and networking opportunities in attaining their desired goals. What makes it unique is the career support, mentorship, internships, and practicum experience that the program offers. I am excited about the opportunity to connect with other passionate individuals in the field of higher education in advocating for Sustainable Development Goal 4. Step 1 for applicants of funded Master's applications abroad: A. Search your target program in detail. Start from modules/seminars/case studies, and break down the components in bits and pieces of program offerings. This stage will help you define why you want to pursue this program. Write it down, make a table. B. What is your previous education, work experience and where does it align with the elements you broke down in 1A? Add this in another column in the table you made above. C. If you want to apply for a scholarship, this means more applicants, more competition! Now is your time to think if you have done enough through previous education/work/volunteering? Yes: well done! You are a fit and competitive candidate. No: start building up! Get started with that volunteer experience you are passionate about. Remember: Building a journey changes your life - it's a mandatory prerequisite if you aim to create an impact in the lives of others. Take responsibility and don't try to fool around at this step.

I am more than excited to share a recent article by Dr. Dilrabo Jonbekova, Dr.Jason Sparks, Dr.Dinara Mukhamejanova and me in Higher Education Policy. This article is focusing on the influence university-industry collaborations have on students' employability. The main obstacles to the positive impact of university-industry collaboration on students' learning and employability were identified as poorly organized internships, excessive government control, and education policies that overlook regional economic differences. Hey everyone! Welcome to our page 😄 !! Now that many of you have been accepted to great policy schools (Congratulations 🥳), here are some tips to help you make the most of your time before you start school and hit the ground running from Day 0 🚀 : 🎓  Identify a policy domain/role of your interest– Identify policy areas (such as education, tech, health etc) you’re passionate about or the type of work (such as data analysis, advocacy) you're interested in. This will act as a guide as well as a check to ensure that all your actions are aligned or at least related to your area of interest. If you are still exploring, that’s completely fine 🙂 - keep a few interest areas in mind to explore in grad school! 👨🏫 Start engaging with your professors: Start connecting with professors whose work interests you. Set up coffee chats (virtual or in-person) to learn about their research and discuss potential work opportunities with them. 📈  Look out for research centers in the university: Just like reaching out to professors, start identifying research centers across the university (pro tip: do not restrict yourself to the policy school). Research centers often have different recruitment processes, so reaching out to them early will give you a head start. 📚  Be strategic about selecting courses: While policy school is a great place to explore, try to ensure your activities are directional and interconnected to build a strong career foundation. Select courses and professors that align with your interests, build in-demand skills, develop your work portfolio, and/or offer valuable networking opportunities. 📆 Start connecting with current students and alumni: Start reaching out to seniors and recent graduates of your program/university. A lot of it. 🌸🌞📆 US admission semesters: - Spring (January start date): Some schools offer admissions but Spring is not the main semester! - Summer(June start date): Some schools offer admissions but Summer is not the main semester, at all! - Fall(August start date): All schools offer admissions. Fall is the main semester! FundingNot all graduate assistantships and fellowships are created equal, so be very careful when comparing offers. At first glance, one offer may look substantially better than another, but be sure to check the fine print. For example, one graduate assistantship may only provide direct financial support in the form of a stipend. You may have to pay tuition and fees from this stipend. Another assistantship may come with a small stipend, but waive tuition. Still another may not completely waive tuition, but provide in-state tuition to someone from out-of-state. Remember that the cost of education is also influenced by the cost of living in a community. In California, rent may be significantly greater than that in a small Midwestern town. Finally, both teaching and research assistantships require a work commitment. Most are "half time", which means that you are expected to work approximately 20 hours per week, although quarter time assistantships are common at some universities. Also, perceptions of what constitutes a 20 hour work week vary by institution, so another question you should ask after receiving an offer is what a typical assignment entails. The more informed you are, the better decisions you’ll make regarding where to apply. Drafting a Personal Statement The personal statement is a significant part of university applications. A well-crafted essay can make a difference in competitive admissions processes, where many candidates have similar academic qualifications. Grade 11 is the perfect time to start reflecting on your achievements, interests, and experiences. Use this time to identify key experiences you would want to share in your essays and begin drafts so you can refine them over time.
