We often focus on the content we are teaching, this is a powerful reminder that how we teach can be just as valuable. 👩🏫 Teaching Colleagues: Sharing personal experiences with your pupils can be transformative. I used to be a very private teacher until I noticed a shift in my classroom dynamics when I couldn't hide I was pregnant and constantly eating Parma Violets. My students showed more empathy and support, creating a stronger connection. Don’t underestimate the impact of letting your students see a bit of your personal side. Consultancy Colleagues: When working with early career professionals, consider the leadership shadow you cast. Are you demonstrating good habits and embodying company culture? It's not just about the technical work. Embrace the opportunity to lead by example and also to learn from those you mentor who are new to the consultancy world. 💭 By integrating personal experiences and fostering mutual learning perhaps we can create more empathetic, supportive, and effective environments in both teaching and consultancy.

The main things I learnt from my biology teacher were not on the syllabus. The main things Nanny McPhee taught the children she looked after were not household chores. Sometimes the things we learn from other people are not the things we are being actively taught.

All the nuances of a great teacher; empathy, humour, presence, how to construct language, how to treat people and all the other things that come with teaching cannot be achieved by punching prompts into a machine. It’s not just about the learning and getting something right, it’s much deeper than that. The sad loss of human interactions and the fundamental ability to converse. The things we learn from other people are not the things we are being actively taught.
