Rough sharks (Oxynotidae) are a small family of deepwater sharks consisting of five species. Three species are threatened with extinction from overfishing. Their slow growth and few young, combined with an unusual diet of shark eggs, make this group of deepwater sharks susceptible to overfishing, which highlights the need to provide refuge from human activities.
