How is Phoenix preparing for record summer heat? 🌡️ Arizona is one of the hottest states in America. CBS News recently uncovered the significant steps the city of Phoenix is taking to address the extreme summer heat: 🤝 Appointed the city’s first Heat Officer to manage the effects of the warming city. 🧊 Established two 24/7 cooling centers for residents to gather when temperatures reach extreme highs. 🌳 Initiated a tree-planting campaign along public pathways and roads, creating cooling corridors to mitigate the urban heat island effect. 🏝️ Urban heat islands are caused by concrete and asphalt in large cities. These materials trap and release heat, leading to increased temperatures in cities like Phoenix. These measures are crucial for protecting the community and adapting to extreme heat. What other measures should cities consider to protect vulnerable citizens? 👇 Watch the full news story at https://lnkd.in/eVdeHvgc 🔗 #ClimateAdaptation #UrbanHeatIsland #PhoenixInitiatives #HeatResilience #Sustainability #ClimateChangeAction

21st June is #ShowYourStripes day This image of stripes shows the temperature change from 1850 to 2023 for Norwich, UK. It visually depicts an increase in annual average temperatures over the last 173 years. Like me, (and despite the recent UK weather) you may be acutely aware of the fact that our British summers (and winters) are progressively feeling hotter. These ‘warming stripe’ graphics are visual representations of the change in temperature as measured in a particular country, region or city over the past 100+ years. Each stripe or bar represents the temperature in that area averaged over a year. The blue lines show years that are cooler than the 1961-2010 average and the red years show those that are warmer. What do you notice about the stripes in your area??? You can download a Stripes Graphic for your area here: https://lnkd.in/ekcCAb4n #ShowYourStripes Day is a global movement to share our concern about how the climate is changing and the need for urgent action through this powerful visual representation. There's a new tool from the National Weather Service called HeatRisk, which "provides a forecast risk of heat-related impacts to occur over a 24-hour period," according to the site. As temperatures rise in Arizona, it's important to know when a heat wave is coming and to stay prepared. Last year, TNC Arizona's Healthy Cities program released a Heat StoryMap that explores heat inequities, teaches about solutions to extreme heat and includes perspectives from local residents. One feature of the Storymap allows you to search for your address in the Phoenix Metro Area and see how your neighborhood's heat, tree canopy and social vulnerability data compares to the average for the area.
