A new SCOTUS ruling will make it a lot harder for federal agencies like the EPA to write new climate rules targeting GHG emissions for power plants, cars, you name it. It may also make it harder to also push through federal rules like the SEC's climate disclosure rules. A potential setback but not all hope is lost. So what can we do? - the responsibility to fight climate change now falls more than ever on state and local governments to enact climate policies. Support these programs by being an active citizen. - pressure companies and organizations to not abandon their climate goals in the face of these types of developments. Keep the momentum alive!

"$4.6B for climate action plan implementation available from EPA Measures that reduce greenhouse gas emissions the most will get priority in Environmental Protection Agency funding decisions. Local governments can now apply for a total of $4.6 billion in competitive grants to implement climate action plans, the Environmental Protection Agency announced Wednesday. The competition — also open to state, territorial and tribal governments — is the second phase of the Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program. In the first phase, the EPA distributed $250 million in noncompetitive grants to help communities develop the climate action plans they can now apply for funding to implement. According to the EPA, “state and local action is vital to deliver on President Biden’s commitment to reduce climate pollution by 50-52% by 2030.” The application deadlines are April 1, 2024, for the general competition and May 1, 2024, for the tribes and territories competition." The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea issued a landmark opinion last week about the obligations of states with respect to oceans and climate change. The opinion is not legally binding but sends a strong signal to governments that they need to take action to protect the marine environment from climate change impacts and adopt measures to restore degraded marine habitats and ecosystems. https://lnkd.in/gjuZR2zQ #itlos #climatechange #marine
