🌍 Urban Heat Islands: A Hidden Health Crisis 🏙️ As our cities grow, so does the heat! The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect is turning cities into dangerous hotspots, leading to serious health risks like heart and respiratory diseases. 🌡️ But there's hope! 🌿 Nature-based Solutions (NbS) — like planting more trees and creating green spaces — can help cool our cities. In Europe, increasing tree coverage from 15% to 30% could prevent 1 in 3 heat-related deaths. 🌳🌲 Greener cities = Healthier lives! 💚 It’s time to act and make our urban areas cooler, safer, and more sustainable. 🔗 Read Tamara Iungman full essay here https://lnkd.in/ddkwY4Sk Tamara works Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) and this essay is based on original research published in The Lancet in 2023: Cooling cities through urban green infrastructure: a health impact assessment of European cities by Tamara Iungman and colleagues. #UrbanHeatIsland #ClimateAction #GreenCities #PublicHealth #SustainableLiving #CoolCities #NatureBasedSolutions #TreePlanting #HealthyCities #ClimateResilience #CHSCA2024 #scientifyRESEARCH

🌍 November 3, 2024, marks the ninth annual One Health Day. This year, as we observe One Health Day, our hearts go out to everyone affected by the recent severe flooding in Valencia, Spain. This tragedy highlights how urgent and interconnected our challenges are. The triple crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution are directly and adversely impacting our cities. In such context, we strongly believe that the One Health approach should guide cities adapting urban spaces with nature-based solutions including social inclusion to minimize impact of climate disasters and protect urban populations. As European cities face these threats, it's time to bring One Health to the forefront of EU policy. We urge cities to join our Call for Action to EU policymakers for a One/Planetary Health approach that leads us to a sustainable, healthier future. #OneHealth #PlanetaryHealth #SustainableCities #ClimateAction #EU Guillaume FAUVEL Diana Sepulveda Sofia Aivalioti Marlène Dussauge Céline de Laurens URBACT Päivi Sieppi ICLEI Europe Lahden kaupunki / City of Lahti Ville de Lyon Shreya Utkarsh

🌍 Big News for Urban Health in the EU! 🌍 Today marks a pivotal moment for improving the air we breathe across European cities. The EU Council has officially given the green light to strengthen air quality standards, a crucial step forward in protecting public health and ensuring cleaner urban environments. This decision will have a profound impact on urban health, particularly for vulnerable populations like children, the elderly, and those with chronic health conditions. Air pollution is one of the most pressing public health challenges in cities, contributing to respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and premature deaths. By setting stricter standards, the EU is prioritizing health, reducing the burden of pollution-related diseases, and paving the way for healthier, more livable cities. Key benefits of these new standards include: - Reduction in harmful pollutants like nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and particulate matter (PM). - Improved air quality for millions of Europeans, especially in densely populated urban areas. - Alignment with the latest scientific evidence to protect public health. As we move toward more sustainable and resilient cities, this is a significant step in ensuring that cleaner air becomes a fundamental right for all. Mistral Project will continue the push for healthier urban spaces! 💨🌿 More information at the link: https://lnkd.in/gHuUcYjc #UrbanHealth #CleanAirEU #PublicHealth #Sustainability #EU #EnvironmentalPolicy #AirQuality #ClimateAction #HealthyCities #AAQD

A mental standing ovation for this op-ed: "Progress can be made, and it has — in Beijing, Tokyo, Berlin, Los Angeles and other cities. Establishing national air quality standards, enforcing those standards and monitoring progress at the local level was crucial to reducing air pollutants at their source in those cities. Achieving such success, though, requires air quality data over long periods. Few global health issues can be alleviated with an investment of just a few million dollars a year. But gathering air quality data in some of the world’s most polluted countries is one of them." https://lnkd.in/dniV-_Ye

Human health is intimately connected to landscape health 🩺 The natural environments that form a backdrop to our lives are not just scenery: they provide the fundamental “ecosystem services” that keep us alive and well. As more of the world’s ecosystems become degraded, our own (human) health is increasingly at risk. To ensure humans can lead long, healthy lives and communities can flourish, we need to live in environments that are flourishing too – and this means protecting, restoring and regenerating the world’s landscapes. Understanding landscape restoration as a health benefit creates a compelling incentive for communities, policymakers, and individuals to prioritise and actively engage in the restoring healthy environmental systems. Because it underscores an undeniable truth: by cultivating the health of the landscapes we are part of, we simultaneously nurture our own health. Portugal is the country in Europe where the death rate in winter and summer has the highest correlation with outdoor temperatures. This paper describes the development of a new public dashboard that uses a new early warning index for extreme weather events, the CLIMAEXTREMO index, which extends the existing warning system by improving the current forecasting models for risk by integrating new sources of public data and increasing the spatial and time resolution of the warnings to the municipality or the parish level. The new index combines a new model to estimate the relative mortality increase together with a model of the indoor temperature of building archetypes for all municipalities and a vulnerability index that considers socio-demographic economic indicators. This work discusses the results of a new risk indicator for the heat waves that occurred in Portugal at the end of June and mid-August 2023, and it shows that the index was able to indicate a high risk for the municipalities that had an increase in the number of deaths during that period. #HeatWaves #ColdWaves #ExtremeWeather #EarlyWarningSystem #VulnerabilityIndex #IndoorTemperature #RelativeExcessiveMortality #SustainabilityTools Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge IN+ Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research Interactive Technologies Institute

Health in the EU Climate Risk Assessment: What does it mean for Belgium? Belgium is uniquely vulnerable due to its dense population, urbanization, geography, pre-existing public health problems (high % respiratory problems, older population and rising age, high NCD disease burden). Climate change and other environmental hazards are already impacting health in Belgium today, and will worsen in the future. This article explores the health dimensions of the EUCRA, focusing on the implications for Belgium’s healthcare system, population, and climate policies.
