NWO (Dutch Research Council) shines the spotlight on the societal impact of research proposals "When submitting their research proposal, researchers must reflect on the possible consequences of their research, both desirable and undesired. NWO will also look more critically at its own collaborations with third parties. An assessment framework has been drawn up for this purpose to assess research collaborations. NWO takes these steps to carry out the best research with the greatest contribution to science and society." (Own translation from Dutch) We welcome NWO´s move. Recently, Scientists for Future Netherlands has engaged with NWO about their policy regarding academic collaborations with fossil companies. This led to several publications, first by Guus Dix, Klaas Landsman and Roderik Van De Wal in Trouw: https://lnkd.in/es7w57qM This newspaper replied by getting their philosophical team onto the topic: https://lnkd.in/exF7FG8n https://lnkd.in/emzPz7JM #climatecrisis #researchintegrity #gsp

The Dutch transition towards Open Science is accelerating. However, let's not lose sight of 𝘸𝘩𝘺 we are pushing for more open science! By making the production of scientific knowledge more accessible, we ensure inclusive, global knowledge exchange. And by involving more people in the scientific process, we increase the likelihood that its outcomes will benefit everyone. Hence, it is crucial that we make sure the transition towards Open Science does not exacerbate existing inequities, or even create novel ones. This is the premise of UNESCO's Recommendation on Open Science, which was adopted by the organization's nearly two hundred member states - the Netherlands included. Today, the Netherlands Commission for UNESCO presents an English-language brochure on this Recommendation. This attractive and easy-to-read introduction, developed by the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, helps to make sure that we keep asking the right question: on behalf of whom, and for whom, do we produce knowledge? Congrats to Eveline Pinseel, PhD with her ERC grant. In her innovative project DIADAPT project, she aims to to study how diatoms evolve in response to climate changes over both short and long timescales. Diatoms, also known as 'silica algae,' are single-celled organisms found in oceans, freshwater, and soils. They play a crucial role in our planet's health, contributing to 20% of the Earth's annual oxygen production—more than all rainforests combined. As the foundation of marine food webs, they also help regulate the global climate by exporting CO2 to the deep sea when they die. By focusing on genetic evolution and gene expression, DIADAPT will enhance our understanding of diatoms' adaptability to climate change and their role in marine ecosystems and global carbon cycling in the future. Learn more about her project below! #ERC #diatoms #sustainability

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Metamoforze NL finances research projects in the field of paper conservation. This research program aims to promote new knowledge aimed at the conservation of paper and thus the preservation of valuable collections and archives. Metamorfoze is looking for proposals that focus on themes such as: Materiality: research into new materials and technologies for conservation and restoration. Sustainability: strategies for long-term preservation of paper materials. Safety: research focused on safety for the collection, employees and customers. Proposals in English will also be considered. Metamorfoze funded the project I carried out on the South Asian drawings in the Wereldmuseum in Leiden. Without this funding, I would never have been able to carry out this project in good conditions, comfort, freedom and confidence. https://lnkd.in/eVs_FQBw

I have some SWEET news to share! I am very exited that I have been awarded a Veni grant from the NWO/ ZonMW for my SUGAR-CART project! SUGAR-CART stands for ‘Specific Use of Glycosylation Adaptations to Reinforce Chimeric Antigen Receptor T cells’. Every cell in our body is decorated with a layer of sugars via a process called glycosylation. These sugars have important functions in signaling, but to date little is known about the impact of glycosylation on CAR T cell responses. With this project I aim to investigate which sugar decorations are promoting CAR T cell responses, with the ultimate goal to design a glycosylation-modified CAR T cell with improved efficacy.
Wonderful news! The NWO (Dutch Research Council) has awarded a Veni grant of up to €320,000 each to ten outstanding researchers of the University of Groningen and the UMCG. Congratulations to Ariane GAYOUT, Kira Juliane Tiedge, Michelle Bruijn, Kostia Gorobets, Arpan Rijal, Amaury de Vicq de Cumptich, Lars de Wildt, Merel Semeijn, Tycho Dekkers and Valerie Rose Wiersma! 🎉 For more information about the researchers, please click the link down below. 👇 https://lnkd.in/geygPTmP #veni #grants #research #impact #rijksuniversiteitgroningen #universityofgroningen

I support this blog post by Ludo on the consequences of cutting funds for Open Science NL #AcademiaInMotion
Last week, in the new Dutch National Budget, it was announced that funds for Open Science NL will be cut by half. In a new blog post on Leiden Madtrics, Ludo Waltman discusses why this matters. The text is available both in Dutch and English 👇

What is the role of power in transdisciplinary research? Last Thursday, we attended a symposium on Power in Transdisciplinary Research, organized by the Rathenau Instituut. The central question of the event was: What role does power play in transdisciplinary research? This is highly relevant for panl as well. Upon arrival, participants were given a card with the prompt: "Power is...," inviting them to define power and pin their answers to a clothesline. Eefje Cuppen, director of the Rathenau Institute, defined power as access to resources, such as money, knowledge, information, and processes. It's about having a voice, the ability to participate, being heard, and making an impact. The symposium explored how power shapes the dynamics in transdisciplinary research projects. In such collaborations, power is often unevenly distributed. Different stakeholders have varying access to resources and influence, making it essential to reflect on power relations. Who has access to information? Who decides which questions are asked and which answers are sought? A key takeaway was the importance of acknowledging and discussing power imbalances. Power carries responsibility. Researchers, funders, and facilitators of transdisciplinary research must reflect on their roles and the influence they wield over the research process. Panl plays a crucial role in this landscape. By connecting scientists with citizens across the Netherlands panl enables researchers to involve citizens more easily in their projects and provides citizens with the opportunity to share their voices and insights within the academic world. Transparency, continuous reflection, and open dialogue are core values at panl. Reflecting on our own role and the responsibilities we hold as facilitators of transdisciplinary research is vital to our mission. A big thank you to the Rathenau Institute for organizing this insightful and important event! Let’s continue reflecting on the role of power in our collaborations, so we can fully harness the potential of transdisciplinary research. Excited and above all very grateful that the Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded me a Veni Grant! 🧠 📲 Today, a range of emerging technologies are enabling others to access, monitor, and manipulate our mental states in ways that were previously inconceivable. They include neurotechnology and digital techniques such as brain-computer interfaces and AI assisted emotion recognition. Modern technologies like these are increasingly threatening our mental liberty: the freedom to think, desire, and feel – without interference by others. ⚖ Academics and human rights bodies across the world are now considering how human rights can protect mental liberty in the age of modern technology. This debate has a strong focus on the scope of human rights. 💡 However, apart from the scope of human rights, adequate protection of mental liberty also depends on the permissible limitations of these rights. Should human rights over the mind allow for limitations? Or should (some) unsolicited interferences with our mental liberty never be permissible? ❓ The central question of this Veni project is: “Should the protection of mental liberty in international and European human rights law have an absolute core?” Project title: Mental Liberty in the Age of Modern Technology: Towards Absolute Human Rights for the Mind? The project will start in January 2025 and run for four years at Tilburg Law School, Tilburg University A BIG THANKS to everyone who has assisted me during the application process! https://lnkd.in/eviUpd_V
