I've seen too many early to mid-stage companies make this mistake - getting dazzled by impressive sales figures from major organizations while missing the bigger picture... While assessing potential candidates, take a moment to step back and ask: Does this person have an inspiring vision for advancing our company? Will they be able to craft and execute long-term strategies aligned with our goals, not just execute short-term tactics? What has led someone to their current position may differ significantly from what's necessary to reach your desired destination. Look for adaptable leaders who can guide teams through uncertain terrain. From then on out, that’s when I decided to no longer open my mouth. True story. Leadership comes up with a promotion. Promotion doesn’t go well. Leadership asks sales for feedback. Sales gives feedback. Leadership rips sales for bad feedback and being negative. Sales decides to no longer give feedback. Message to us leaders. I hear this all too often.. "They are too senior for the role" 😐 "They will leave when something better comes up" 🙈 "They will get bored" 🙄 What is not said is people feel threatened by hiring people who have more experience than them and think experienced hires are harder to manage. Be open to hiring people with more experience. How do you measure your success as a leader? This is something I’ve been asking myself as a newer CMO. There’s a number of metrics to constantly look at… -Revenue / ARR Growth -Enterprise Value -For GTM - CAC/CAC Payback These are all important business metrics that I care about, but when I think about “leadership”, I think about my team. One of things I hope my team will say at the end of our run working together is that they did the “Work they are most proud of in their career.” If I can create an environment where people are consistently pushing themselves to do their best work and clearly understand the impact they are making on the business, that’s a win. This creates a story on their resume that they will share for the rest of their career. This matters more to me than the numbers. Impacting someone’s career lasts forever, the metrics are a number in a point in time. How else do you think about success as a leader?
