Illinois just passed a new law that prohibits the use of #AI if it results in illegal discrimination in employment decisions or recruitment (link to full article in comments). Similar laws already exist in New York and other states. Employers, If you currently use artificial intelligence as part of your sourcing or screening process, have you considered what bias might be built into those models? Do you have safeguards in place for mitigating the risk of tech solutions or partners unintentionally introducing discrimination into your hiring process? If not, please reach out. 65% of employers say better job fit is the number one benefit of skills-based hiring (Big thank you to those who took our poll over the last two weeks). Reduced turnover and faster time-to-hire came in at number two with 14% each, and surprisingly, reduced bias in hiring only got 7% of the votes as the key benefit of skills-based hiring. I say surprisingly because DEI is often mentioned as a key goal for companies, particularly diversity in recruitment and hiring. Yet, it never seems to make the cut as being a crucial part of the business decision around which tools or strategies get adopted. "The cherry on top" or "nice but not necessary" are frequent comments from clients when bias reduction is mentioned as a key benefit of skills-based hiring. Despite years of articles and data from Harvard Business Review, Forbes and countless others on the ROI of increased diversity within companies, it remains a fringe byproduct, rather than a central component of hiring strategy. Why is this? What would it take for "bias reduction" to be seen as a strategic part of increasing revenue and decreasing cost rather than a bonus piece of fluff that marketing can use?
