https://lnkd.in/eRd4KC6y. I have been looking back over the EU's involvement in technology over the last few years and - frankly - the track record isn't great... Cookies Notifications - another click to clear page no one ever reads that does nothing at all to help users. I get it. You use cookies. So what. Non solicitation regulation around email - I still get just as much spam, just as many fishing scams and just as many hooks for Russian ransomeware attacks...but legitimate company's can't send me an email advertising their wares unless I have personally signed my permission in blood GDPR legislation that means it now costs billions a year for corporations to maintain their customer lists. The average number of people asking to be deleted from corporate databases in a 5 year period is 0.000039% (I think - I may have missed a couple of noughts). That's probably a hundred grand per request!!! Finally, and my absolute favourite, all tablets and smartphones MUST have a USB-C connector to, quote, save the number of chargers going to landfill. It's obviously lost on the power brokers in Europe that the industry solved this little conundrum a decade ago by making a plug block, with a USB and a separate cable and then stopped shipping chargers with phones. Whenever you let politicians fiddle around with the tech world they ignore all of the important stuff that needs reigning in and go for pointless, soundbite policies that resonate only with people who don't actually understand technology...or read the Daily Mail...making doing business more complicated, hugely more costly whilst at the same time stifling innovation. The only issue with being "out" of the EU is there is now no adult-in-the-room to veto this nonsense before it is forced on us by default! Be warned - there is currently a raft of legislation in front of the EU that will affect how our products are designed, sold and delivered over the coming decades. Much of it in the same vein as quoted above. This covers cars, computing, mobiles, online sites and many other aspects of life. Britain will end up having to adopt all of this into law, or comply, as we aren't a big enough consumer nation for manufacturers to make stuff just for us.

These are super important comments from ONI Chief Andrew Shearer: “If we don’t reassess our risk appetite around technology and uptake of technology, I think we’re going to fail.” Governments put a lot of barriers in front of their own tech adoption. While risk-based frameworks are incredibly helpful tools in managing risk - they exist for a very good reason - the risks of not adopting new technologies are often not a consideration. They should be. If security control frameworks are applied too rigidly - without consideration of the intent of the controls or the real risks that need to be managed - the pool of providers becomes too small, newer emerging tech is potentially ignored and government inadvertently hamstrings itself. There's now a lot of cost-effective advanced technologies that can be deployed very quickly by people (including as Andrew points out, our adversaries) operating outside of the realms of budget cycles, non-agile multi-year systems integration/capability development projects and lengthy risk-averse procurement processes. Speed and accountability need not be mutually exclusive concepts. Taking many smaller, faster steps, evaluating progress and assessing risk as you go - and then deciding whether to move on - can actually drive far more accountability and cost effective outcomes. https://lnkd.in/gyBzPWQV

Tech Update: The best technology is useless without empowered users. Information is key to bridging the gap unlocking the true potential of technology and delivering value to the people. The PNG Department of Information and Communications Technology has been in the spotlight in recent times, aggressively driving the country's digital transformation agenda. A commendable progress has been made in the policy front. However, implementation remains to be seen. The Department this week launched a dedicated website (www.digital.gov.pg) outlining its key initiatives. Secretary Steven Matainaho says that the website provides valuable information on programs like the GovCloud, Citizens' eGovPortal, Secure Data Exchange Platform, and Standards & Compliance" and invites National and sub-national government agencies (DTOs) to visit the website for in-depth details and resources.
